Prayer: Father, foolishness begins when I think I can do life on my own and cut You from the equation. Keep me centered in You. Amen.
Reading: Psalm 127 key: vs. 1-2
1 A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon.
Unless Adonai builds the house,
the builders labor in vain.
Unless Adonai watches over the city,
the watchman stands guard in vain.
2 In vain you rise up early and stay up late,
eating the bread of toil—
for He provides for His beloved ones even in their sleep.
Attention: Did you catch who wrote this psalm? It is important that we speed read the scriptures and pass up a keynote of importance. If you are new to the Bible, you may not be aware of who Solomon’s identity and that he is attributed with authoring a couple of books in the Bible, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon (sometimes calls Song of Songs).
My observation is this, in Ecclesiastes he begins this book with a statement that all things in life are “vain,” and futile. In the 127th Psalm, he uses the word “vain” three times (always look for repetition in scripture as typically repetition is used for a purpose, to give emphasis or importance to a concept) in reference to the importance of Adonai being the center in your life.
Solomon uses the analogy of a physical building being built. I have been in the trades, mostly remodel but when a builder builds a building, he does not just start nailing boards together. An architect is the first point of consultation. Blueprints are made and even submitted for approval. May I suggest that Adonai is the chief architect? Are you consulting Him through the scriptures and prayer to build your life? Solomon tells us, “Unless Adonai builds the house, the builders labor in vain.”
Unless we are allowing Adonai the architectural rights to our life, we are building our lives in vain. Solomon calls that futility. You have heard the definition of insanity is, “doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results.” Solomon who is credited with being the wisest man who ever lived. He would agree with that statement with the added twist that it is foolish to try to do life on your own.
Let us avoid the futile foolishness of the world view, which is centered on “me,” and an attitude of “I’ll do it my way, apart from Adonai.” I encourage you to invite Adonai today, to orchestrate your life and stop striving in vain to design your own life.
Action: I will begin today to ask Adonai to orchestrate my life.
Yield: Relinquish control over my life choices, decisions, and directions.
Engage: Ask Adonai to order my steps.
Relationship: Adonai is Adonai, and I am not.
Prayer: Father, I want to stop the futility today by giving You my heart, mind, and soul. Transform me and make me into Your image. Amen.
Memory Verse: Psalm 127: 1b
Unless Adonai builds the house,
the builders labor in vain.
Unless Adonai watches over the city,
the watchman stands guard in vain.
