Prayer: Father, may I be calmed and quieted in my soul, like the child in today’s psalm. Wean me from the milk of the Word and help me to feast on the meat which helps me to grow up unto You. Amen.
Reading: Psalm 131 key vs.2
2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul—
like a weaned child with his mother,
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
Attention: Just as a child outgrows the breast or a bottle physically, a follower of Yeshua is meant to grow up spiritually and be weaned off the milk of the Word and begin eating solid food.
It is appropriate that the psalmist uses the analogy of our growth from infant to childhood. There is an anticipated progression of life. We teach and expect a child to become self-sufficient, learning how to use a fork and spoon and feed themselves. We would think it odd to have a teenager (apart from inabilities to do so), sitting in a highchair and having to feed them. Why should we think any differently about the spiritual feeding of ourselves from the Word of God?
This is what the Choose Life Journal method is about, teaching followers of Yeshua, how to feed themselves on the Word of God, the Bible. We are giving you the tools to open the Bible and with the help (mentorship) of the Holy Spirit, feed yourself and experience the transforming work of the Spirit. Teachers of the Bible are good and helpful but requiring them to be your only source of learning about Adonai is limiting. You can only develop a relationship with God when you personally interact with Him in the person of His Spirit.
If we limit ourselves to pastors and teachers, we only learn about God and have an infant like relationship with God. I do not mean to be insulting but limiting ourselves to devotionals is like allowing someone to tell you about how great your spouse is, without interacting personally with your spouse. Scripture tells us that Yeshua is our bridegroom. Do you not want to know your Bridegroom (Matthew 9:15), personally. Do you not want to fall in love with your Bridegroom?
My desire for you is that you might fall in love with Adonai and His Word like we are commanded, “with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind (Matthew 22:37).” We cannot fulfill the second half of this commandment if we do not fulfill the first. The vertical supersedes the horizontal. After all, how much is “all”?
Do you remember when you weaned your first child from the bottle or their blanket? Oh my! For some, this is not a fun time. Like those who had a difficult experience weaning your child, are you ready to be weaned from the milk of the Word and begin eating solid food?
Action: I will commit to the daily process of the Choose Life Journal so that I may grow up in relationship with Adonai.
Yield: I will give up the bottle and begin to eat solid food.
Engage: I will engage with the Holy Spirit in being transformed in heart and mind.
Relationship: I want to learn to love Adonai with all my heart, mind, and soul.
Prayer: Father, I want to love You with all my heart, all my soul, and all my mind so that I can love others more completely. The more I love You, the more I love others. Amen.
Memory Verse: Hebrews 5:13-14
13 For anyone living on milk is inexperienced with the teaching about righteousness—he is an infant. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who through practice have their senses trained to discern both good and evil.
