Prayer: Father, may I not be naïve to the seductive ways of life. Please give me the radar to identify the intentions of the people I encounter. Is their heart for evil or for good? Amen.
Reading: Proverbs 5 key: 1-2
My son, pay attention to my wisdom.
Incline your ear to my insight,
2 that you may maintain discretion
and your lips may preserve knowledge.
Attention: Have you ever had a mentor in your life? If you have a musical background, you may have had a voice or instrumental teacher or a conductor. If you were an athlete, you have experienced good and bad coaching. If you were in the military, you had drill instructors and ranks of command. Few of us have ever been mentored in life. We might have role models, but they are not really mentors. Even Solomon, while he is pleading with his son (or sons), seems to be sharing from personal experience. If you are not familiar with Solomon’s life, he had an encounter with Adonai (1 Kings 3:1-15), a dream in which Adonai asked of Solomon, “Ask for what should I give you!” He asked for wisdom and Adonai was so pleased with Solomon’s reply, that He also offered Solomon length of days in his life, if he would “walk in My ways.”
Later in the book of 1 Kings we are told the rest of the story regarding Solomon. After having been given wisdom as a gift from Adonai, he did not use that wisdom in his personal relationships. When a king like Solomon has prominence as he had, other kings and queens came to see his wealth and make alliances with him. Alliances included kings giving Solomon their daughters as wives. This gifting sealed the peace treaties. However, the consequences were grave. You see, daughters from foreign lands worshiped foreign gods and Solomon loved his wives. He even made them altars so that they could worship their gods. Do you think that pleased Adonai? What do we know about the Ten Commandments?
So, what kind of conflict do you think was created in Solomon’s heart since he loved his wives and Adonai? The result was that “as Solomon grew old, that his wives led his heart away after other gods, so that his heart was no longer wholly devoted to Adonai his God, unlike the heart of his father David” (1 Kings 11: 1-25).
What is the difference in a Divine mentor and an earthly mentor? Earthly mentors speak in warning after the fact, Divine mentors warn before the fact. Earthly mentors are saying don’t do as I did, Divine mentors are saying follow me.
In the Choose Life Journal system, you are seeking the Divine mentoring of the Holy Spirit as He is tasked to “guide us into all truth (John 16:1-15).”
Action: I will seek wisdom from above through the Scripture and the Holy Spirit.
Yield: I am yielded to Adonai when I pay attention to His wisdom.
Engage: Listening and obeying instruction is critical in engaging with the Holy Spirit.
Relationship: I am actively listening and obeying Adonai when I am in relationship with Him.
Prayer: Father, new levels of relationship are gained with new levels of listening and obeying Your instruction! Amen.
Memory Verse: Proverbs 5:11-14
11 At the end of your life, you will groan,
when your flesh and body are spent—
12 and you will say, “How I hated discipline!
How my heart spurned reproof!
13 I would not listen to my teacher’s voice
or incline my ear to my instructors.
14 I was almost in utter ruin amid
the community and congregation.”
