Train up a child

Prayer: Father, Your Word is full of wisdom. Wisdom which is untapped, unread, not heeded, and ignored. As a people, we wonder why we struggle and strive. Help me to read and head and apply Your Word. In Yeshua’s name. Amen.

Read: Proverbs 22 key: vs. 6
Train up a child in the way he should go,
when he is old he will not turn from it.

Attention: Are you training your child? How much training did you receive from your parents? Are you aware that in the Hebrew culture of Solomon’s time, the primary task of the training and education of children was tasked to the parents? (Deuteronomy 6:7)

I remember hours of reading to my mother as she ironed. I remember hours of flash card training my mother used to help me memorize the multiplication, addition, and subtraction tables. I remember being taught to tie my shoes and tie a tie. Those were hours well invested. I remember Vacation Bible School teaching and requiring the memorization of scripture. How much of instruction from the Bible do children receive today? In comparison to the hours spent on video games today, how much time today is invested in spiritual growth?

Can we agree that a child’s direction is determined by the amount of spiritual direction given to them? Solomon is telling us that if the investment in training is made when a person is young, the payoff comes when they are adults, they “will not turn from it.” Is that what we see in our culture today?

The phenomena of kids leaving their faith did not just occur in this generation. It happened in my generation too. Kids went off to college and never returned to the church. Was it because of a lack of training? Training was part of the issue. We did not realize it at the time, but we have been programmed away from the Word of God, the Bible and worship.

A vital part of a child’s instruction is spiritual. Developing a concept of who God is through the Scriptures. In a recent journal I encouraged grandparents to leave a spiritual legacy. If we did not train our children spiritually, or if they have walked away from the training you gave them, our grandchildren are our next best hope and opportunity for us to sow spiritual seed into their lives.

Journaling is another way to leave a documented, written legacy of your heart for Adonai. Do not give up on your children or your children’s children. Pray for them continually and leave a spiritual heritage for them to read and find.

Action: I will journal for my spiritual growth and for the purpose of leaving a legacy to my children.

Yield: I am yielded to the Holy Spirit when I train my children.

Engaged: Training is engagement in my child’s life.

Relationship: Training is obedience to Adonai and builds relationship with my children.

Prayer: Father, I long to be obedient to Your Word. Train me so that I can train my children. Help me to leave a spiritual legacy which will help my children know You. In the name of Yeshua, amen.

Memory Verse: Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go,
when he is old he will not turn from it.
