Prayer: Father, I acknowledge You as the source of life and breath, truth, and wisdom. Amen.
Reading: Job 28 key: vs. 12, 20, 23, 28
12 “But where can wisdom be found?
Where is the place of understanding?
20 Where then does wisdom come from?
Where is the place of understanding?
23 “God understands its way
and He knows its place.
28 And He said to mankind,
‘The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom,
and to turn away from evil is understanding.”’
Attention: I did something a little different today in my focus on a key verse. I hope that the four key verses give a progressive synopsis of the questions and answers which Job poses. The process which Job leads his friends through, is to acknowledge the questions. We cannot discover the answers until we ask the proper questions. The origin of philosophy is to ask proper questions.
I recall observing a judge several years ago in the finalization of a settlement agreement in a divorce case. Settlement was the final obstacle to the decree all parties were seeking. He asked if all parties were satisfied with the settlement agreement, and he wisely ascertained from the pause that satisfaction was not the properly phrased question. So, he rephrased his question and both attorneys replied in the affirmative and he replied, “if you ask the right question, you receive the answer you are seeking.” He then proceeded to declare the divorce finalized.
Are we asking the correct questions of God? Are we listening to His answers which are prescribed to us through the Spirit, through the lives of others documented in scripture? I discovered 1 Corinthians 10:11 years ago but apply it more than ever now. What can I learn from the people’s lives which are recorded in scripture for my benefit? The warts of their lives were included on purpose. Not to shame them, but so that we could avoid repeating their folly and suffering the consequences of our rebellion.
One final observation about Chapter 28. Job’s final comment confirms the source of wisdom, “the fear of the Lord.” Notice that the fear of the Lord is the key to wisdom and the action of wisdom is understanding with results in “turning away from evil.” There is much evil in our world today. Evil is so camouflaged that it is deceiving. I encourage you to keep seeking wisdom so that evil is more discernable and identifiable.
Action: I will see the Wisdom of God so that I can discern the counterfeit.
Yield: I submit to the Wisdom of God.
Engaged: I will engage with the Holy Spirit so that I am connected to the source of wisdom.
Relationship: I must be seeking the wisdom which is from above to be able to apply wisdom horizontally.
Prayer: Father, I seek Your wisdom in all things so that I may always turn away from evil. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Amen.
Memory Verse: 1 John 5:18
18 We know that anyone born of God does not keep on sinning; rather, the One born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot touch him.
