Prayer: Father, I exalt You today as The Sovereign Ruler of heaven and earth. I glorify You and praise You. Be magnified today! Amen.
Reading: Psalm 57 key: vs. 8 & 12
8 My heart is steadfast, O God,
my heart is steadfast.
I will sing, yes, I will make music.
12 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens.
Let Your glory be over all the earth!
Attention: Did you observe the focus of David’s writing? His purpose is all contained in verse 1. He is recalling a critical event in the transition of leadership in Israel. David had been anointed but not yet installed as king and Saul was threatened by the awareness of David’s popularity and eventual succession. Saul wanted his son Jonathan to succeed the throne. However, Jonathan is best of friends with David and seems to accept that he will not succeed his father.
The dynamic of David and Jonathan’s relationship and the dwindling anointing of a terrorized king, causes David to be on the run for his life. Because David knew his time was not yet and he honored the position held by Saul, he chose to run to avoid conflict. The Michtam in today’s reading recalls an encounter with Saul taking a relief break in a cave and unaware that David is just feet away. David could have taken his life but chose to take a memento instead. If you are not familiar with this account, please read 1 Samuel 24.
David showed a proper respect for an anointed king. It was not his place to come against Saul. He waited and allowed for Adonai to install him in His time.
Action: I will stay patient and allow Adonai to install me in the leadership He desires.
Yield: I am yielded when I allow Adonai to take control of my life.
Engage: I am fully engaged when I respect God’s anointed and anointing.
Relationship: A fully engaged relationship is patient and prepared while waiting.
Prayer: Father, may I exhibit the character of David while I wait, prepare me. When You install, may I not hesitate to heed the call. Amen.
Memory Verse: Psalm 57:10
10 I will praise You, my Lord, among the peoples.
I will sing praises to You among the nations.
