Rainbow, A Perpetual Covenant

Prayer: Father, Your covenant is important, and it is perpetual. May I embrace today the sign which You have set in the sky for a purpose. Amen.

Reading: Genesis 9 key: vs. 16-17
16 When the rainbow is in the cloud, I will look at it, to remember the perpetual covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the land.”
17 Then God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have confirmed between Me and all flesh that is on the land.”

Attention: How many rainbows have you witnessed after a good rain shower or storm? Have you ever witnessed a double rainbow? Did you know that God established the rainbow for a purpose? His original design was for the rainbow to be a sign to us regarding His covenant and a reminder to Him of the covenant He had struck with us never to destroy life upon the earth ever again by flood. When you take pause to realize the impact of destroying every living thing, man, beast, and every flying thing, upon the earth, the gravity is impressionable. Imagine the cries of neighbors, friends, and the surrounding community as they perished in the flood.

We are not told that the final parting sounds were the cries of their neighbors. Perhaps the thunder and lightning were so overpowering that Noah and his family were spared the memory of their cries. Remember, Adonai caused the flood because of the overwhelming depravity or evil of man. What Adonai (God) calls evil, we cannot call good. In coming chapters, we will see Adonai destroy another region of cities which had become morally depraved. He destroyed them in a totally different way and method.

Flooding still occurs. We have witnessed severe flooding and storm surges in recent days in parts of the United States. Nothing on the magnitude of the Great Flood of Genesis.

Notice that the key to the covenant of the rainbow is that it is “perpetual.” What does perpetual mean? Ongoing. It never dies or becomes antiquated. It continues to each generation, to “all flesh that is on the land” (vs. 17).

I encourage you the next time you see a rainbow, rejoice and awe at its splendor. Also, if you are a parent, if your children are with you, tell them the biblical account of Adonai’s covenant with a purpose. Each generation needs to know the true story of the rainbow and its purpose.

Action: I will tell my children about the rainbow, Adonai’s covenant to all mankind, with a purpose.

Yield: I am yielded when I praise Adonai for his rainbow covenant.

Engage: I am engaged with Adonai when I praise Him for His rainbow sign.

Relationship: I am in relationship with Adonai when I praise Him for His works.

Prayer: Father, I praise You for the rainbow and the promise it brings. I like the truth of Your promise to all mankind. I give glory to You for Your faithfulness and love. Amen.

Memory Verse: Genesis 9:16
16 When the rainbow is in the cloud, I will look at it, to remember the perpetual covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the land.”
