Very Great Sinners

Prayer: Father, what makes one person obedient and another rebellious is a mystery to me. Your Word reveals all. Provide new insight today into the dynamic of obedience and rebellion. Amen.

Reading: Genesis 13 key: vs. 12-13
12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the valley. And he moved his tent from place to place near Sodom. 13 But the people of Sodom were evil—very great sinners against Adonai.

Attention: Have you ever been faced with a choice between two things. Perhaps, two job offers? One pays more, has better benefits, but requires relocation and uprooting your family. It has more advancement opportunities, but the other company has a history of stability and is located near you with a short commute.

Abram and Lot had both been blessed with growing herds of sheep and cattle. In fact, the living arrangements were too close, and quarrels were breaking out between their hired hands. So, they agreed to put some distance between them. Abram offered Lot first choice and whichever direction he headed; Abram would go in the opposite direction. Lot chose what appeared to be the choicest of land, “well-watered in its entirety—like Adonai’s Garden (Eden).”

Only one caveat about the area which Lot chose, “but the people of Sodom were evil—very great sinners against Adonai.”

Your neighbors make a lot of difference in the quality of life. Even if the job opportunities were equal, would the quality of life in the region make the difference? If the city was known to have a high crime rate and drive by killings every day, would you place your family’s well-being over their safety, to take the better paying job?

What qualified the people of Sodom as evil? Moses tells us that the people were great sinners. What made them great sinners? The text tells us that they were “against Adonai.” They were rebellious and their lifestyle was in contradiction to God’s law. Isn’t rebellion what makes all of us great sinners?

Action: I will be obedient to God’s law and His lifestyle for those who follow Him.

Yield: When I am obedient to God, I am submissive to His law.

Engage: I am engaged with God when I am obedient to His law.

Relationship: I am in alignment with God when I am in relationship with Him.

Prayer: Father, I commit my life to You. Help me be obedient and submissive to Your law and will for my life. Amen.

Memory Verse: Proverbs 3: 7-8
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear Adonai and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your body
and refreshment to your bones.
