Reading: Genesis 19 key: 13
13 For we are about to destroy this place, because their outcry has become so great before Adonai that Adonai has sent us to destroy it.”
Attention: I can recall as an adolescent; my brother was given a chemistry kit as a present. He did all kinds of experiments with the chemicals. One experiment I recall vividly. He placed a small amount of sulfur, which as I recall was a bright yellow in color, on a measuring device. He held it over a Bunsen burner and immediately an acrid cloud of sulfur was emitted. It stunk.
Adonai rained down fire and sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah. I understand fire because of it’s destructive and lethal nature, but why sulfur? I looked up an article on the character of sulfur online, dated November 14, 2017 by Earl Garcia, Sulfur — toxicity, side effects, diseases and environmental impacts (naturalpedia.com) Here is the link for further investigation. It is nasty smelling and “notorious for its detrimental effects on the respiratory tract.” Sulfur seems to have a higher toxicity to animals.
Just as Adonai wiped out all living things in the Great Flood, every living thing was killed in the Sodom and Gomorrah region. Why were the two angels sent to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah? Verse 13 gives us the answer, “because their outcry has become so great before Adonai.” The depravity of man had reached the point of no return. Their rebellion against Adonai was that great. Notice the response of Lot’s sons-in-law, when he told them of Adonai’s plan: “But in the eyes of his sons-in-law, he was like a joker (14b).”
What is to keep Adonai from doing the same thing to your hometown or city? Are the righteous prayers of a few preventing Adonai from destroying your region? Are you praying for the souls of men and women and praying against the rebellion and depravity? It’s maybe you who are the only firewall between your town and destruction.
Action: Knowing that I could be the last firewall, I will begin to pray diligently for the lost souls in my town or city.
Yield: I surrender to the Supreme and Righteous King of the universe, Adonai Elyon.
Engage: I engage in a righteous lifestyle with Adonai.
Relationship: Adonai promises when I draw close to Him, He will draw close to me.
Prayer: Father, what is life apart from You? Rebellion is a part of our life as a toddler and beyond until we submit to You. Transform my life as a submitted follower of Yeshua. Amen.
