Nazarite Vow

Prayer: Father, may my vows be kept and honoring to You. Amen.

Reading: Numbers 6 key: vs. 1-2 & 8
Again Adonai spoke to Moses saying, “Speak to Bnei-Yisrael and say to them: Any man or woman who desires to vow a Nazirite vow to be separate for Adonai
All the days of his separation, he is to be consecrated to Adonai.

Attention: Have you ever made a vow to God and broken it? There are serious consequences for making a vow unto Adonai and breaking it. Deuteronomy 23:22 Adonai through Moses expresses that “When you make a vow to Adonai your God, you are not to delay to make good on it—for God will certainly require it of you, and you would have sin on you.”

In 1975, I made a vow to God to serve Him in full time ministry. I felt through divorce that I had disqualified myself from ministry as a pastor in a church setting. Several years ago, I found Romans 11:29, “for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” What a relief to know that I could not undo what God and purposed in my life and the gifts and calling are not exclusive to paid ministry. If I am called, I am in ministry for the rest of my life. I just needed to comply with my calling and the former vow I had made. I have been compelled to serve Him, love Him, live for Him the rest of my earthly days.

A few observations about the Nazarite vow which must have been a part of the greatest Nazarite to ever live on earth. The Nazarite vow was composed of three components:

  1. No strong drink (wine or any fermented drink) vs. 3-4.
  1. No razor to the head until the time of consecration (hair is to grow long) vs. 5
  1. Not to touch or go near a dead person vs. 6-8.

The various requirements were declared by God and required as outward signs of devotion. Men mentioned in the Bible as having subjected themselves to the Nazarite vow included Samson (Judges 13), Samuel (1 Samuel 1), and John the Immerser (Luke 1: 15-17).

If you have made a vow to God at some point in your life and you have not fulfilled it, I encourage you to reengage in the process of keeping the vow you made to Adonai. Perhaps you know that you have run away from your vow. I encourage you to confess your sin and be reconciled to God.

Action: I choose to reengage with God today, in the vow which I have made to Him.

Yield: I give my life to the One who gave His life for me.

Engage: I choose to engage or reengage with the Holy Spirit as my guide.

Relationship: I choose to be in total submission to the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Father, one of the happiest days of my life was the day that I repented of breaking my vow to You and reengaging in the Your service. A paycheck is not involved in my service of obedience to You. You continue to meet my needs. I renew my vow to You to serve You the rest of my earthly life! Amen.

Memory Verse: Matthew 5:37
37 But let your word ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’—anything more than this is from the evil one.”
