Prayer: Father, may listen diligently to Your words. Your words, the scriptures, were penned so that I would not make the same mistakes the many who followed before me made, if only I will listen and obey. Help me to be an obedient listener today. Amen.

Reading: Deuteronomy 1 key: vs. 43
43 “So I told you, but you would not listen—you rebelled against the command of Adonai and presumptuously went up into the hill country.
Attention: There is a wise old saying, “Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.”
― Edmund Burke
May I take the quote from Edmond Burke and apply it to chapter one of Deuteronomy. Moses is giving the new generation a history lesson about their parents. How they did not listen to Adonai and thus were not allowed to possess the land which Adonai had promised the Hebrew nation through their father Abraham (Genesis 15:13-18).” Not only did Adonai cut a covenant with Abram, He prophetically told Abram what would happen to his seed in the coming generations. They would be strangers in a land which would oppress and enslave them for 400 years. But then they would return here to the land which Adonai promised his heirs. Adonai told him exactly what would happen. He knew men’s hearts and His prophecy would be fulfilled.
Here lies the key to successful living. Listening to God (Adonai) and obeying His Word. The generation which Moses is now speaking to, needs to hear the Words (Law) which Adonai had given their parents and they had disobeyed. Moses conveys to them what they have no knowledge of, good or evil.
We do not know God’s Word if we have not studied it and/or our parents and pastor teachers have not taught us. Moses is attempting to educate the next generation before they cross the Jordan River and enter the promised land.
I want to re-emphasize a passage in 1 Corinthians 10, in which the apostle Paul says, “Now these things happened to them as an example, and it (the scriptures) was written down as a warning to us (vs. 11).” If you read the verses preceding, Paul is referencing the very people which Moses is telling their children about. They tested the Lord and paid with their lives.
May we heed the warnings of scripture, which is a historical accounting written for us, so that we may avoid the same mistakes.
Action: I choose today and for the rest of my journey with Adonai, to listen to His words, and obey.
Yield: I yield my will to Adonai. To listen, follow and obey His Word, the rest of my life.
Engage: I choose to engage with the Holy Spirit every day through scripture.
Relationship: I choose to abide in intimate relationship with Adonai, with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Prayer: Father, I pray for everyone who engages with Your Word. May they become hearers and doers of the Word. Amen.
Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 10: 11
11 Now these things happened to them as an example, and it was written down as a warning to us—on whom the ends of the ages have come.
