Prayer: Father, the more I study Your Word, the more I consider myself as forewarned of the consequences of sin. I can choose blessing or curse according to Your instruction. Help me to choose blessing. Amen.
Reading: Deuteronomy 27 key: vs. 26
26 ‘Cursed is the one who does not uphold the words of this Torah by doing them.’ Then all the people are to say, ‘Amen.
Attention: If you have grown up in the church as I have, there is a word which we include at the end of a prayer. It is the word, “Amen.” The word amen is a “transliteration of Hebrew word signifying something as certain, sure and valid, truthful and faithful. It is sometimes translated ‘so be it (pg. 56 Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary copyright 2003).”
One may have also heard Congregationalists shout an amen as a point of agreement with a statement made by a pastor. I have always heard of amen being the concluding statement of a prayer. In today’s scripture reading, the Hebrew people were to shout their agreement with the statement given by the Levites (priests).
In the New Testament, Paul ended some of his letters with “amen” (Romans 16:27; Galatians 6:18). Jesus however, began His statements with “Amen, I say to you” (Matthew 5:18; 16:28; Mark 8:12; 11:23; Luke 4:24; 21:32; John 1:51; 5:19). “In John’s Gospel Jesus said “Amen, amen. That Jesus prefaces His own words with “amen” is especially important, for He affirmed that the kingdom of God is bound up with his own person and emphasized the authority of what He said (HIBD pg. 57).”
We also find Jesus called “the Amen” in Revelation 3:14, that “He Himself is the reliable and true witness of God.”
The next time you utter an amen, consider what you are saying. You are declaring your agreement with the prayer, scripture, and affirming your agreement with Yeshua, the Great Amen.
Action: I choose to declare my agreement with scripture, prayer and Yeshua by uttering amen.
Yield: I choose to yield an amen as my way of affirming scripture and the Great Amen.
Engage: I choose to engage with the assembly of God in declaring my agreement with scripture.
Relationship: I choose full intimate relationship with Adonai.
Prayer: Father, I thank You for being the Great I AM and for Yeshua being the Great Amen. For He will one day return and put an amen on all of eternity. Amen.
Memory Verse: Revelation 3:14
14 To the angel of Messiah’s community in Laodicea write: “Thus says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Originator of God’s creation:
