Twelve Memorial Stones

Prayer: Father, Your servant and slave, is ready to receive instruction this morning. I love You and I love Your Holy Word! Amen.

Reading: Joshua 4 key: vs. 20-24
20 Those twelve stones, which they had taken out of the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal. 21 Then he said to Bnei-Yisrael saying, “When your children ask their fathers in time to come saying: ‘What are these stones?’ 22 then you will inform your children saying, ‘Israel crossed this Jordan on dry ground.’ 23 For Adonai your God dried up the waters of Jordan before you until you crossed—just as Adonai your God did to the Sea of Reeds, which He dried up before us until we crossed over— 24 so that all the peoples of the earth may know Adonai’s hand is mighty, and so that you may fear Adonai your God forever.”

Attention: I had the pleasure of visiting our nation’s capital in 2010. The Lincoln Memorial, the Viet Nam Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery (Tomb of the Unknown Soldier) were among the many sites we visited. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a monument dedicated to deceased U.S. service members whose remains have not been identified. If you are visiting the Washington, D.C. or Virginia area, I encourage you to include Arlington National Cemetery as one of your destinations.

Memorials are made for the purpose of documenting history and providing an opportunity to tell the story to the generations which follow. For this purpose, God established a Twelve Stone Memorial during the crossing of the Jordan, which would also commemorate the crossing of the Sea of Reeds. “When your children ask their fathers in time to come saying: ‘What are these stones?’ then you will inform your children saying, ‘Israel crossed this Jordan on dry ground.’

Do you see how these acts of God differentiate Him from other gods? How long does it take for a riverbed to dry up? God not only dried up the riverbed in an instant, but He also held the waters back while the entire nation walked on over on dry ground.

Did you notice that the end of verse 9b says, “they (the twelve stones) are there to this day.” I have never visited Israel. I have friends who have, and they have spoken of memorial stones which are stacked along roadways to this day. I don’t know if these same stones are alongside the Jordan river, but if God wanted them there, I am confident they would be.

I encourage you to tell your children the stories, purpose, and meaning regarding our national and spiritual memorials.

Action: I choose to tell my children the stories, purpose, and meaning surrounding our national and spiritual memorials.

Yield: I choose to pass along to the next generation, the stories, purpose and meaning of memorials.

Engage: I choose to engage my children in conversations about memorials.

Relationship: I choose to build relationships with my children and family regarding the spiritual memorials which Jesus gave us.

Prayer: Father, the Lord’s supper (Communion Table) is purposed to remember the Lord’s death until He comes again. I praise You for the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Amen.

Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you—that the Lord Yeshua, on the night He was betrayed, took matzah24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you. Do this in memory of Me.” 25 In the same way, He also took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in memory of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
