I Will Honor

Prayer: Father, I pray that my life, my mind, my heart, honor You today. Amen.

Reading: I Samuel 2 key: vs. 30 “Therefore Adonai God of Israel declares, I indeed said that your house and your father’s house should walk before Me forever. But now declares Adonai, far be it from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who despise Me will be disdained.” TLV

Attention: Over the course of the past two or three decades, there has been no shortage of national headlines about the fall of pastoral leadership. From affairs to child exploitation, those who are anointed to leadership, have dishonored God, and disgraced their calling.

Within Eli’s household, his sons are accounted as “worthless men” (vs. 12), “despised the offering of Adonai (vs.12b)”, and who “slept with the women who served at the doorway of the Tent of Meeting” (vs. 22b). When confronted by Eli, “they did not listen to the voice of their father” (vs. 25b).

God had declared that Kohens and the priestly order were anointed unto Him. He asked Eli, “did I not choose them from all the tribes of Israel to be My kohanim, to officiate at My altar, to burn incense and to wear an ephod before Me? Did I not give to the house of your father all the fire offerings of Bnei-Yisrael?” (vs. 28).

God charged Eli with honoring his sons above Him. Of dishonoring His offering and sacrifice. So, He declared that Eli’s household would no longer “reach old age” and his sons “on the same day both of them will die” (vs. 34b).

The dishonor Eli’s son had brought Adonai to the point of contempt. Yet, Adonai declared, “I will raise up for Myself a faithful kohen who will do according to what is in My heart and My mind. Then I will build him an enduring house, and he will walk before My anointed one all the time” (vs. 35).

Samuel would become the Kohen which Adonai spoke of. A Kohen “who will do according to what is in My heart and My mind.”

May the attitude of Samuel’s heard and mind, become our attitude, doing what is in Adonai’s heart and mind. God declares He will honor those who honor Him. May we honor Him today!

Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Ruach ha-Kodesh who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.” TLV
