Prayer: Father, through marriage, I strike such a covenant with my wife. Oh, to experience such a covenant loyalty from a friend of the same gender. Amen.
Reading: 1 Samuel 20 key: vs. 41-42 “As soon as the lad was gone, David emerged from the south side and fell on his face to the ground and bowed down three times. Then they kissed each other and wept together, though David wept more. Then Jonathan said to David, “Go in the shalom that we both have sworn to each other in saying: ‘May Adonai be between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’” TLV
Attention: I have experienced male friendships which centered around sports or hobby interests. But never have I experienced a spiritual bond like David and Jonathan.
I count David and Jonathan’s relationship among one of the most extraordinary bonds in history. Their relationship bond was based in “the Name of Adonai.”
We will see the depth of love each had for the other, later in the 2nd book of Samuel. David has just assumed the throne and inquires if there is anyone from the house of Jonathan who needs help. Jonathan has a crippled son named Mephibosheth that David takes into his house to dine at his table.
May we strive to emulate the example of David and Jonathan, in establishing relationship with a brother or sister “in the Name of Adonai.” Wouldn’t a relationship covenant with a brother or sister in the Lord be the epitome of loving others as ourselves?
Action: I choose today to ask the Lord to help me establish a covenant relationship with a brother in the Lord.
Yield: I choose today to yield to the Lord the ordering of my steps today and every day.
Engage: I choose today to engage with the Holy Spirit in bonding covenant relationships.
Relationship: I choose today to live in covenant relationship with God and man.
Prayer: Father, David and Jonathan by example established a covenant relationship with each other and each other’s family members for life. May I experience the depth of love for another brother as David and Jonathan. Amen.
Memory Verse: 1 Samuel 20:42 “Then Jonathan said to David, “Go in the shalom that we both have sworn to each other in the Name of Adonai saying: ‘May Adonai be between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’” TLV
