David’s Conscience Bothered Him

Prayer: Father, may the Holy Spirit be my conscience and guide. May I listen to Your voice alone. Amen.

Reading: 1 Samuel 24 key: vs. 4-5 “So David’s men said to him, “Look, it’s the day Adonai spoke to you about, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, so you may do to him as seems good in your eyes.’” Then David crept and cut off the corner of Saul’s robe stealthily. But afterward, David’s conscience bothered him for cutting off the edge of Saul’s robe.” TLV

Attention: In the early seventies, I sold a early 70’s Mustang coupe to my dad. It was powder blue with a dark blue vinyl top, T/A radial tires with dish mag wheels. It was the last year that Ford made the full-size Mustang. We settled on a price and then being it was my dad; I lowered the price by what we figured the transfer fees would be. I felt it was the right thing to do not knowing the law in Washington State. When we went to the office to transfer title, the officer noticed the seller and buyer’s last names were the same and inquired if we were related. My dad responded, “Yes, this is my son.” The officer responded, “Then there is no service charge, just the title fees.”

Once David revealed to Saul what he had done, notice that both parties address each other as “father” and “son”.

Interestingly, David inquires of Saul, “Why do you listen to men’s words saying: ‘Look, David intends you harm’?” If David had listened to his men, he would have seized the opportunity to kill Saul. The cup of cold water extended to Saul brought him to tears. Then he said to David, “You are more righteous than I, for you have done good to me, while I have done evil to you.”

It makes a difference in our own lives whose voice we are listening to. Are we listening to God or man? David would not raise his hand to God’s anointed. He never does. He waits for God to establish his throne. Even Saul prophetically confirms the eminent reality of David’s kingship over Israel, “I know for certain that you will be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will rise in your hand.”

We may have people, even family members, who are seeking to harm us. May we take the approach of David. May we extend a cup of cold water and allow God’s hand to prevail.

Action: I choose today to allow God to deal with my enemies. I choose his divine protection.

Yield: I choose today to surrender to God’s plan for my life and my enemies.

Engage: I choose today to engage in the process of extending a cup of cold water to my enemies.

Relationship: I choose today to stay in a close intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Father, You are in control. May I be patient with Your timeline for my life. May I extend a cup of cold water to my enemies. Amen.

Memory verse: Proverbs 25:21-22 “If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, for you will heap coals of fire on his head and Adonai will reward you.” TLV
