Who Do You Run To

Prayer: Father, teach me through the life of Saul. May I never make the choice he made, to consult a medium. Amen.

Reading 1 Samuel 28 key: 3-6 “Now Samuel had died, and all Israel had lamented him and buried him in Ramah, his hometown. Saul had removed from the land those who were mediums and spiritists. So the Philistines mustered and came and camped in Shunem; and Saul gathered all Israel together and they camped at Gilboa. Now when Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, he was afraid and his heart trembled greatly. When Saul inquired of Adonai, Adonai did not answer, neither by dreams nor by Urim or prophets. TLV

Attention: In Stuart Briscoe’s article titled Foxhole Faith (June 4, 2023), he begins, “It is commonly understood that there are no atheists in foxholes. Men who exhibit little interest in spirituality and eternity are suddenly moved to pray when under fire. Others have been known to experience dramatic conversions under threat of hanging.”

In life, there are two types of men when in desperation. One will turn to God, the other will turn away from God. David always sought God in times of trouble. Saul seeks the counsel of a medium. Samuel had died and the steady spiritual adviser was not available, and Adonai was silent.

I hope most anointed me would repent and cry out to God. Not Saul, in desperation, he consorts with a medium. The text says Saul had driven the “mediums and spiritists” from the land. But his efforts had missed one. It boggles my mind how Saul could resort to such desperate measures. It is the final straw. The medium conjures up the spirit of Samuel and he prophesies the death of Saul and his sons in battle the next day.

For those who are running from God, humble yourself and cry out to God in repentance. I encourage you not to take Saul’s course of action and run to a medium. You will secure God’s wrath.

Action: Today I choose David’s lifestyle of repentance and calling out to God.

Yield: I choose to yield and call out to Adonai in times of trouble.

Engage: I choose to engage with God in ordering my steps.

Relationship: I choose to stay in close relationship with God.

Prayer: Father, I run to You as my Source of life and protection. You are my all in all. Amen.

Memory Verse: Psalm 66:13-14 “With burnt offerings I will come to Your House, fulfilling my vows to You that my lips uttered and mouth spoke, when I was in trouble.” TLV
