Trustworthy

Prayer: Father, one of the most important traits I can emulate from You is being trustworthy, for You are trustworthy and faithful. Amen.

Reading: 1 Samuel 28 key: vs. 6-7 “So Achish called David and said to him, “As Adonai lives, you have been upright and your going out and your coming in with me, in the army are pleasing in my eyes. For I never found fault with you since the day of your coming to me up to this day. However, the other lords do not approve of you. So now, turn around and go back in peace, and you won’t be doing anything to displease the Philistine lords.” TLV

Attention: I think I was around the age of 10, when my dad gave me a Sheridan pellet rifle for my birthday. I was taught the proper use of and respect of a rifle. I used both open sites and a 3-power scope and I became accurate with my aim. My vision grew to a desire to experience a hunting trip someday which my dad promised, “Someday I’ll take you hunting.” That day never arrived.

When I was in my early forties, I had a teenage son who had seen me return from hunting trips and wanted to experience hunting. So, I made plans to take him hunting and invited my dad to join us. He politely declined my offer, to which I was saddened by his declination. It was my dream to fulfill the promise he made to me years earlier.

I do not tell this story to disparage my dad’s memory. I love my dad. We have all failed to keep our word or promise to someone, in some way, if we have lived long enough.

However, trustworthiness is a characteristic of Adonai and according to Achish’s testimony, David held true to his word of promise to him. Remember, in chapter 27, Achish said this of David, “Then Achish trusted David, saying, “He has certainly made himself abhorrent to his people Israel; therefore, he will be my vassal forever.” Achish declared his trust of David, so much so, that in chapter 28 he says, “I appoint you my bodyguard for life (v. 2).”

King Achish knew David and trusted him, but the other Philistine commanders did not know David and therefore, did not trust him. It was better that David and his troops not accompany the Philistine army.

Oh, that it might be said of us, “we kept our word.” Above all, may we be called trustworthy. For, trustworthiness is a characteristic of God.

Action: I choose today to exemplify Adonai as a trustworthy person.

Yield: I choose today to yield to the Holy Spirit as a person of trustworthiness.

Engage: I choose to engage with the Holy Spirit in being a person of integrity.

Relationship: I choose today to live in intimacy with the living God, Adonai.

Prayer: Father, may I like David, be a person spoken of and remembered for trustworthiness. May I represent You well as a trustworthy person. Amen.

Memory Verse: Luke 16:10 “One who is faithful in the smallest matters is also faithful in much, and the one unjust in the smallest matters will likewise be unjust in much. TLV
