Prayer: Father, power struggles are not a new thing. At worst, they represent the heart of man as distrustful and power hungry. May I learn from the examples of scripture, the humbleness of a servant of Yours. Amen.
Reading: 2 Samuel 3 key: vs. 1 & 6 “Now the war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time. While David grew steadily stronger, the house of Saul grew steadily weaker.” “During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner strengthened his position in the house of Saul.” TLV
Attention: C.S. Lewis said of Aslan, ““He’ll be coming and going” he had said. “One day you’ll see him and another you won’t. He doesn’t like being tied down–and of course he has other countries to attend to. It’s quite all right. He’ll often drop in. Only you mustn’t press him. He’s wild, you know. Not like a tame lion.”
Over the centuries, kings have been characterized as lions as they war over kingdoms. The house of Saul is still trying to ward off the will of God. Abner is loyal to the house of Saul. David’s house poses a threat to the former reigning power. Only Abner and a son of Saul, Ishbosheth, stand in the way. David has not been vigilant to establish his kingdom. He has allowed Adonai to establish his throne.
David’s commander Joab seizes the moment to finalize the transfer of Adonai’s anointed uniting all of Israel. David still lamented the death of Abner, and the people knew by his demeaner, that David did not wish for Abner to be killed. It is recorded that “All the people took note of it and it pleased them, just as everything the king did pleased all the people. So all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not the king’s will to kill Abner son of Ner” (vs. 36-37).
David did not seek revenge as Joab did and there were ongoing consequences for his actions. We can look on his actions after centuries of scrutiny and determine that Joab did what needed to be done. Perhaps God would have intervened if Joab patiently waited.
May we possess the humility of David in the transfer of power and ownership in all things.
