Ugly Side of a Transfer of Power

Prayer: Father, there is a cost to disrespect and defiance of You. The last act is performed in today’s reading. May Your servant learn, observe, and apply the lesson you have for me from Your Word. Amen.

Reading: 2 Samuel 4 key: vs. 5-7 “Now the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, set out and came to the house of Ish-bosheth at the heat of the day, as he was taking his midday nap. When they came within the house, as though to get wheat, they stabbed him in the stomach. Then Rechab and his brother Baanah escaped. When they had gotten within the house, he was lying on his bed in his bedroom, they stabbed him and killed him, then beheaded him and took his head, and traveled by the way of the Arabah all night.” TLV

Attention: Ish-bosheth was the last vestige of Saul’s lineage. The news of Abner’s death caused Ish-bosheth’s “courage to sink.” Abner was his father Saul’s commander which had established him as king in Israel’s regions outside of Judah. Abner was Ish-bosheth’s line of defense and now he is gone. Rechab and Baanah see this as the perfect opportunity to assassinate Ish-bosheth. They think they are doing David a favor. So, the same fate of Saul, becomes Ish-bosheth’s fate. The same fate of the messenger who told him of Saul’s fate, became Recab and Baanah’s fate.

David reconfirms for perpetuity; he will not raise his hand against God’s anointed and his family. We do well to do the same and not take matters into our own hands but allow God to act and promote in his timing.

We live in an era of instant everything. Adonai owns time and is not bound by time. He is not in a rush. He appoints times and seasons. He is the Alpha and Omega, beginning and the end.

Action: I choose today to not get anxious or in a hurry, as God is in control of time.

Yield: I choose today to yield to God’s timing for everything.

Engage: I choose today to patiently wait on God.

Relationship: I choose today to live in intimate relationship with God.

Prayer: Father, I admire the patience with which David allowed You to bring the commissioning of kingship to him. He did not seek the throne but allowed You to establish it. You promote whom You will promote. It is You who determines the timing. Amen.

Memory Verse: Daniel 2:19-23 “During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven and answered, saying: “Blessed be the Name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are His. He changes times and seasons. He removes kings and installs kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals deep and hidden things. He knows what lies in darkness and light dwells with Him. To You, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise! For You gave me wisdom and power. You have made known to me what we asked of You. You revealed to us the word of the king.” TLV
