Prayer: Father, I pray that I am listening to Your voice and the questions You may be whispering in my ear. Amen.
Reading: 1 Kings 19 key: vs. 9-13 “When he arrived there at the cave, he spent the night there. Then behold, the word of Adonai came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” “I have been very zealous for Adonai-Tzva’ot,” he said, “for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and slain Your prophets with the sword—and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it!” Then He said, “Come out and stand on the mount before Adonai.” Behold, Adonai was passing by—a great and mighty wind was tearing at the mountains and shattering cliffs before Adonai. But Adonai was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but Adonai was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire, but Adonai was not in the fire. After the fire there was a soft whisper of a voice. As soon as Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle, went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then all of a sudden, a voice addressed him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” TLV
Attention: Have you ever been somewhere that you shouldn’t be? I had a pastor friend tell me, “I would rather have my children ministering in the far reaches of the world and living for the Lord, than living here in my back yard not living for Him.
Elijah was on the run, fearing Jezebel. He had just faced 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah. By my calculations the odds were 850 plus Ahab and Jezebel (852) versus Elijah plus Adonai, a majority, for he was on God’s side. Yet, after a demonstration by the God of fire, he runs from Jezebel.
Elijah possessed the faith to face off with 850 false prophets of false gods yet fled a woman. If you haven’t heard, the acronym F.E.A.R. stands for False Evidence Appearing Real. Why did God ask Elijah in a whisper, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
If we are not where God wants us or has assigned us, then we are not walking in faith. Notice that in the scriptures that follow God’s question, He gets Elijah back in the game. He gives him three assignments: “Then Adonai said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus, and when you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram, and anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place (19:15-16).”
Has God given you an assignment? Are you living in your God given assignment? If not, listen for His whisper, “What are you doing here?”
Action: I choose to be where God has assigned me to be.
Yield: I choose to yield to the Holy Spirit in leading and guiding me.
Engage: I choose to engage in Kingdom business and work.
Relationship: I choose to live in intimate relationship with God.
Prayer: Father, I choose to be obedient to Your call on my life. Elijah ran from Jezebel, but when confronted by God, he arose and continued on assignment. Amen.
Memory Verse: Isaiah 6: 8-9 “Then I heard the voice of Adonai saying: “Whom should I send, and who will go for Us?” So I said, “Hineni. Send me.” Then He said: “Go! Tell this people: ‘Hear without understanding, and see without perceiving.” TLV
