When Anger Does Not Serve You

Prayer: Father, very rarely do I experience in my life, anger benefitting me. You do not like my anger. I do not like me when I’m angry. Others do not like me when I’m angry. Help me to control my anger. Amen.

Reading: 2 Kings 5 key: vs. 12b “So he turned and went away in a rage.”

Attention: One thing which my sports experience gave me was the insight to control one’s anger. I can remember my high school football coach writing on a chalk board, “Pride + Poise = Victory.” You can be angry over a missed call or a turnover, but while you are stewing over that play, another play is continuing the game. Especially true in basketball.

Naaman thought since he was someone important, Elisha would come out to greet him and make a spectacle of the moment. Why surely, he will roll out the red carpet and invite important dignitaries, but Elisha sent word by a messenger what Adonai wanted him to do. Go dip in the dirty Jordan River seven times. The nerve of Elisha. The nerve of Adonai.

However, it is the faith of a servant girl who sent Naaman to Elisha and the faith of his servants who were accompanying him, who asked him, “If the prophet had told you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more then, when he told you only to ‘Wash and be clean?”

The recorded account says, “So, he went down and dipped himself seven time in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God. Then his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.”

Healing came through obedience. Simple obedience. And Adonai received the glory. By Naaman’s own mouth he declared, “Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel.”

When we like Elisha are obedient and declare the will of God to someone and they are healed, He receives the glory.

Action: I choose to be obedient to God’s will so that He receives the glory.

Yield: I choose to submit to God’s will so that He receives the glory.

Engage: I choose to engage with the Holy Spirit in seeing people healed, delivered, and acknowledge that Adonai is God.

Relationship: I choose to live in intimate relationship with Adonai!

Prayer: Father, healing comes to those who will humble themselves before you and acknowledge You as the God of Israel. May the followers of Adonai be obedient to Your word. Amen.

Memory Verse: 2 Kings 5: 15b ““Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel.” TLV
