Prayer: Father, what a beautiful picture redemption gives me. Thank You for redeeming my life. Amen.
Reading: Hosea 3 key: vs. 1-2 “Then Adonai said to me: “Go again! Love a woman who is loved by a companion and committing adultery—just as Adonai has loved the Bnei-Yisrael, while they were turning to other gods and loving raisin cakes.” So I bought her for myself for fifteen shekels of silver and an omer and a half of barley.” TLV
Attention: Just in the last few years, I have become aware of the term “Goel.” What is a Goel? The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia provides this definition: “Goel is the participle of the Hebrew word gal’al (“to deliver,” “to redeem”) which aside from its common usage is frequently employed in connection with Hebrew law, where it is the technical term applied to a person who as the nearest relative of another is placed under certain obligations to him.” Additionally, they provide 5 examples of how the concept of redemption by a Goel worked in the context of Hebrew Law. For my purposes with our text from Hosea, I provide their example regarding marriage: “(3) It also devolved upon the nearest relative to marry the ? childless widow of his brother (Ruth 3:13).
At Adonai’s command, Hosea is going to his wife Gomer and redeeming her from her sin of prostitution. This is a picture of how God redeems us from our enslavement by sin. The apostle Paul confirmed our redemption by Messiah to the Colossian community: “He rescued us from the domain of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son whom He loves. In Him we have redemption—the release of sins (Colossians 1:13-14).”
Likewise, Hosea went and “rescued” his wife from prostitution, a world of darkness, depravity, and abuse. Like the love God has for us, Hosea redeemed his wife and brought her back under his roof and reuniting her with their children. She was restored to her husband and family, just as God declared Israel would be one day.
May we not minimalize the price which Yeshua paid to redeem us and restore us to relationship with God.
Action: I embrace the redemption which Messiah provided for me.
Yield: I yield myself to Messiah as He has redeemed me from sin.
Engage: I choose to engage with Messiah in the eternal lifestyle of loving Him.
Relationship: I choose to live in eternal relationship with my Heavenly, Eternal Goel.
Memory Verse: Colossians 1:13-14 “He rescued us from the domain of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son whom He loves. In Him we have redemption—the release of sins.” TLV
