Kohanim and Levites

Prayer: Father, thank You for the instruction, mentoring, teaching of Your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Reading: 1 Chronicles 9 key: vs. 1-2 “So all Israel were registered by genealogies—behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel. Judah was carried away captive to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness. The first to settle on their property in their towns were Israelites, kohanim, Levites and the Temple servants.” TLV

Attention: It is important to know that one of the sons of Jacob (Israel) was called Levi and from his lineage came the tribe of Levi.

During my lifetime, my family have attended family reunions on both sides of the family, the Wright’s (paternal) and Robert’s (maternal). I know my ancestors back to my great-grandparents.

We all have a genealogy or family tree which plots out the lineage from both parents. In Hebrew history as you can tell from our studies, the lineage is primarily tracked through the father’s and sons and their sons. This is a primary purpose for the “book of the kings of Israel.”

Chapter nine is focused on the kohanim’s and Levites. The tribe of Levi were designated by Adonai as His tribe for priests (Numbers 3:5-12). All priests were from the tribe of Levi. Not all people of the tribe of Levi were priests, as all priests were male and not all males qualified to be priests. However, all priests were from the tribe of Levi.

The tribe of Levi were given specific tasks for Temple or priestly service (avodah). They ranged from baking bread, guarding the Temple, gatekeepers, singers, opening and closing the Temple, handling the ark of the Covenant, and keeping accounting of the treasury. All their tasks and the manner to be carried out were given by God. The kohanim were specifically God’s, dedicated to Him and His service. When Israel came into the land of Canaan (the Covenant Promised Land), when the land was apportioned, the kohanim were not give land because God declared that He was their portion or inheritance: “But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance—Adonai God of Israel is their inheritance, as He had spoken to them (Joshua 13:33).”

In the same way, if we have joined our lives with Christ. Our inheritance is not here on earth but is Messiah Yeshua. He told us before His death, burial, resurrection, and ascension; “Do not let your heart be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in Me. In My Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to Myself, so that where I am you may also be (John 14:1-3).” Jesus is our inheritance.

Action: I choose to place my faith and trust in Yeshua. He is my inheritance.

Yield: I choose to submit to the authority of Messiah.

Engage: I choose to engage with the Holy Spirit in living for Yeshua.

Relationship: I choose to live in holy, intimate, obedient relationship with Adonai.

Prayer: Father, You sent Yeshua to redeem me and provide a way back to You. Yeshua is the way, the truth, the life. He is the only way back to You. Thank You for the obedience of Yeshua. Amen.

Memory Verse: John 14:1-3 “Do not let your heart be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in Me. In My Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to Myself, so that where I am you may also be.”
