He Followed the Torah

Prayer: Father, Your word is a guide for my life. Teach me today. Disciple me in Your Word and Spirit. Amen.

Reading: 2 Chronicles 25 key: vs. 1-4 “Amaziah was 25 years old when he became king and reigned 29 years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan from Jerusalem. Now he did what was right in the eyes of Adonai, but not wholeheartedly. Once he had the kingdom firmly secured under him, he executed his courtiers who had assassinated his father the king. He did not put their children to death, but acted according to what is written in the Torah, in the book of Moses, which Adonai commanded saying, “Parents should not die for the children, neither should the children die for the parents, but every person should die for his own sin.” TLV

Attention: Amaziah started out his 29-year reign well by turning to the Torah, the Jewish Law composed of the first five books of the Bible. The Torah includes Genesia, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. On the Choose Life Schedule, the Torah is scheduled on the second year of readings. There is much to gain from studying the Torah. It is much more detailed than the Ten Commandments.

The Torah (Law) was God’s instructions for ordinances, commands, and decrees. The book of Leviticus for example, is an instructional manual for priests regarding purification, sacrifices, the festivals to be observed, instructions on disease, and instructions on making the ark of the covenant and tent of meeting.

Amaziah is referencing a scripture given to Moses by Adonai, found in Deuteronomy 24:16. There are several verses in the New Testament which would continue with this same meaning. For instance, 1 John 3:4 “Everyone practicing sin also practices lawlessness—indeed, sin is lawlessness.”

The apostle Paul declared to the Roman followers of Messiah, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).

We are each responsible before God, for our own sin, according to the scriptures. Each of us have to answer for our own sin and not our parents or our children.

Action: I choose to embrace the scriptures; I am responsible for my own sin only.

Yield: I choose to submit to the authority of the scriptures and make repentance and confession of my sin, a priority before God.

Engage: I choose to engage with the Holy Spirit in taking responsibility for my sin.

Relationship: I choose to live in holy, intimate, obedient relationship with Adonai.

Prayer: Father, I am thankful that I am not responsible for the sins of my parents or my children. I have been rebellious enough on my own in former years. Thank you for the miracle of forgiveness of my sin. May my prayer be acceptable in Your sight. Amen.

Memory Verse: 1 John 3:4-6 “Everyone practicing sin also practices lawlessness—indeed, sin is lawlessness. You know that Yeshua appeared in order to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin. No one who abides in Him keeps on sinning; no one who sins has seen Him or known Him.” TLV
