A Duet of Praise to Adonai

Prayer: Father, I enjoy giving You praise through music. Thank you for the modeling by Deborah and Barak today. Amen.

Reading: Judges 5 key: vs. 1-3 “Then Deborah and Barak son of Abinoam sang on that day saying: ‘When leaders take the lead in Israel, when people freely offer themselves, bless Adonai! Listen, O kings! Give ear, O rulers! I, to Adonai I will sing, I will sing praise to Adonai, the God of Israel.” TLV

Attention: One of the aspects of the community of faith which I have always enjoyed is worship in music and song. Instrumental music and singing were a part of my family. My Dad played accordion in an accordion band in Minnesota. I remember fondly him playing his favorite gospel songs, like I’ve Got a Mansion Just over the Hilltop.

At church meetings I sang in youth choirs and as I aged, I directed choirs of all ages and led hymn singing. In junior high, I began singing in choirs and participating in ensembles, quartets, duets, and solos. All my life, I have enjoyed music of a variety of kinds, but I enjoy praise music the most.

Today Deborah and Barak lead the Hebrew nation in a praise song declaring how when Adonai advanced, “the earth trembled, the heavens also dropped, yes, the clouds dropped water. The mountains quaked before Adonai.” When the earth begins to quake, it gets people’s attention.

I have lived most of my life in earthquake zones and I have experienced a couple major tremors. Fortunately, I have been in safe places when the quakes hit.

When mountains crumble, quake, and erupt, they cause major disaster. I was going to school in Southern California when Mt. Saint Helens erupted on May 18, 1980. The eruption caused a major portion of the mountain to slide down one slope, killing fifty-seven people and devastating some 230 square miles of forest. The plume of ash was seen passing over several states in the USA, to the east of Washington State. My parents saw the plume over Colorado.

Adonai received Deborah and Barak’s praise, along with the covenant nation. He is worthy of our praise as well. May we always engage in the praise of an all sufficient, mighty God.

Action: I choose today to establish a lifestyle of praise unto Adonai.

Yield: I choose today to surrender control of my life to Adonai.

Engage: I choose today to engage with the Holy Spirit in a heart attitude of praise.

Relationship: I choose today to live in harmony with the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Father, may my life always be an attitude of praise and worship unto You. Amen.

Memory Verse: Psalm 104:33 “I will sing to Adonai as long as I live! I will sing praise to my God yet again!”  TLV
