Prayer: Father, I love Your wisdom, Your insights into the internal parts of man. Transform me with Your instruction. Amen.
Reading: Proverbs 15 key: vs. 1-4
A gentle answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.
2 The tongue of the wise treats knowledge correctly,
but the mouth of fools spouts folly.
3 The eyes of Adonai are everywhere,
observing the wicked and the good.
4 A healing tongue is a tree of life,
but a deceitful one crushes the spirit.
Attention: Have you ever spoken a harsh word to your children or to your wife? What was their response? Tears? A sullen spirit? Have you spoken in anger to a colleague or teammate? What was their response? Have you ever experienced road rage? Have you ever been the raged?
Most of us have been on both sides of this experience. We have been the offender and the offended.
For men, we tend to mellow as we age. I know that I witnessed my dad soften as he aged. I have observed the same in my responses. How I wish I could be able to go back and have a do over.
Ephesians 6:4 gives instruction to “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
To the younger men who are fathers, I encourage you to get a handle on your anger and your mouth. The words we speak and the way we respond has so much power. They have the power of life and death. Your mouth can betray you if you do not allow the Holy Spirit to control it. James Chapter 3 has a lot to say about the tongue and controlling it.
We can do ourselves a great service by following the instruction of the Holy Spirit through men like Solomon and James. Are we listening?
Action: I will submit my mouth to the transformation of the Holy Spirit!
Yield: I will submit my attitude to the Holy Spirit.
Engage: I engage with the Holy Spirit when I give Him control.
Relationship: I am in relationship when I am conforming to Christ’s image.
Prayer: Father, I desire to be gentler and wiser with my words. I do not want to bring anger. I do want to bring peace and healing. Amen.
