Prayer: Father, I have so much to learn from Your Word. Please open my eyes to new mysteries which are contained within Your Word. Amen.
Reading: Deuteronomy 4: vs. 34-35
34 Or has any god ever tried to come to take for himself a nation from within a nation—by trials, by signs and wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors—like all that Adonai your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35 You were shown, so that you might know that Adonai is God—there is no other besides Him.
Attention: Are you convinced of the exclusivity of Adonai? Through the mouth of Moses, Adonai has commanded his Mitzvot (Commandments) and Torah (Law). He also established with them— “there is no other besides Him.” They are to not worship any other gods.
The reason I use Adonai in place of the English word “God”, is so I establish with you exactly and precisely who I am talking and writing about. The term God has become so compromised in English culture, that one cannot be certain which god we are speaking of. Christians may claim they are speaking of the One triune God, of which scriptures speak of, but the English equivalent name has been hijacked.
Most of us have heard God mentioned as a higher power or the man upstairs. Other cultures name their god as the true god. Adonai declares to Moses and the Hebrew nation that He is their God, and they are to serve no others. He is Adonai, who has brought their parents out of Egypt by power and display of “trials, by signs and wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors—like all that Adonai your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes.” They were children then, but they witnessed what God (Adonai) did.
Just as Moses identified the God he spoke with and was directed by as Adonai, it is important for us to know which God we are sharing about to our children and friends. It is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Israel). It is the covenant God of the Hebrew nation, Israel. Unless we tell them, they will not know and grow up with the concept of god which the world speaks of.
It is vital that Moses provide a base of understanding who Adonai is and what His Mitzvot and Torah provide in guidance and direction for the new generation. God expects, demands obedience which their parents didn’t follow. Moses will share the Ten Word with them in the next chapter. God’s words are life to those who obey. If they want to prolong their lives, they will obey.
Action: I choose to heed (obey) the word of God which Moses shared with the Hebrew nation.
Yield: I choose to listen and obey God’s Word.
Engage: I choose to engage with the Holy Spirit in sharing God’s Word with my children.
Relationship: I choose a lifetime, eternal journey with God (Adonai).
Prayer: Father, Your Word is life to me and all who would choose to obey Your Word. Help me to trust and obey that which You have declared to us as Mitzvot and Torah. Amen.
