Prayer: Father, may I lead many men to discover Your Word. For those raised on Your Word but have left it in a drawer, a chest, or closet, may they like Josiah, rediscover the Word of Adonai. Amen.

Reading: 2 Kings 22 key: vs. 8 “Hilkiah the kohen gadol said to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found a scroll of the Torah in the House of Adonai.” So Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan who read it.” TLV

Attention: Have you ever cleaned out your basement or attic and discovered a yearbook from high school, an old diary, or better yet, a Bible which was given to you as a child?

In the remodel of the Temple, Hilkiah the kohen gadol, finds a scroll and shows it to Shaphan the scribe. I can imagine that he blew the dust off it, and unrolled it, revealing the words penned by perhaps, Moses. Shaphan is excited to reveal the discovery to king Josiah and read its contents. However, when Josiah hears the words of the Torah Scroll, he tears his clothes. He is horrified by the pending judgement of Adonai. “Then the king commanded Hilkiah the kohen, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Achbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the scribe and Asaiah the king’s servant saying: “Go, inquire of Adonai for me, for the people and for all Judah, about the words of this scroll that was found. For great is the wrath of Adonai that is kindled against us, since our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do everything written here that concerns us (vs. 12-13).”

They are directed to a prophetess named Huldah and she relays the word of Adonai, “behold, I am bringing disaster on this place and on its inhabitants, as in all the words of the scroll that the king of Judah read (vs. 16).” However, Adonai has mercy upon King Joshiah. Because of his soft heart and humbling himself before God, Adonai assures him He will spare Josiah from seeing “all the disaster I am brining on this place.” He will bring him home and “gather him to his fathers’ grave in peace.
