Because of Jacob’s Sin

Prayer: Father, may I learn from Jacob the consequences of my actions. Amen.

Bible Project: Book of Micah Summary | Watch an Overview Video (bibleproject.com)

Reading: Micah 1 key: vs. 5 “All this is because of Jacob’s transgression and the sins of the house of Israel. Who is the transgression of Jacob? Is it not Samaria? Who are the high places of Judah? Are they not Jerusalem?”

Attention: I have for a time been thankful that God did not choose me to chronicle my sin to be scrutinized by generations of people who lived after me, especially, my family. The first person I think of is David, but there are many. Consider Adam and Eve and their actions and implications for all mankind. Or Abraham and Sarah; Ahab and Jezebel.

Today, Adonai directs Micah to tell Israel of the origin of their sin, their father Jacob. Notice that God says, “All this is because of Jacob’s transgression (singular) and the sins (plural) of the house of Israel.” Remember, Jacob’s name was changed by God to Israel. So, in this prophetic declaration by Micah, he implicates the man and his progeny.

Are you aware of generational curses? Have you heard of families where all the men for generations had spent time behind bars or other illegal activity prevailed. Just as a man or woman can begin a negative family trait, we can choose to leave a faith heritage. I have known of families where pastors or missionaries hailed for generations because of the faith of a father.

It al begins with us. What will we sow, good seed or bad seed? Will we begin a legacy of faith or a legacy of rebellion with God. Remember, Samaria became a center for worship after Israel the nation split in two. The kings of the Northern kingdom did not want their people to travel to Jerusalem to worship at the Temple. There palaces in Samaria were worshipping Baal and leading their people away from Adonai. That was offensive to God and Micah is warning Israel of the consequences, the judgement to come.

If there is any doubt who you serve, I encourage you to declare your allegiance to God today.

Action: I choose to declare my allegiance to the Sovereign Adonai.

Yield: I choose to submit to Adonai and leave a legacy of faith to my children.

Engage: I choose to engage with the help of the Holy Spirit in a holy lifestyle.

Relationship: I choose to live in intimate, holy relationship with God.

Memory Verse: Lamentations 5:7 “Our fathers sinned and are no more, but we bear their punishment.”
