Prayer: Father, may I keep my covenants, agreements, contracts, both legal and non-legal, binding and non-binding, as a reflection of my character and word. Amen.
Reading: 2 Samuel 9 key: vs. 6-7 “Then Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan son of Saul, came to David, fell on his face and prostrated himself. “Mephibosheth!” David said. “Behold your servant!” he answered. “Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land of your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat bread at my table.”
Attention: The kindness of David reflects to his agreement with Jonathan found in 1 Samuel 18 & 20 and ending with a final affirmation, “May Adonai be between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, forever” (20:42b). We are told from the beginning of David and Jonathan meeting, that their souls were “knit together” (18:1). The jealousy which King Saul tried to create between Jonathan and David never existed.
So, out of the depth of love David and Jonathan felt and expressed to each other, David inquires about any family members of Jonathan’s household, who are alive. What emerges is the discovery of a cast off, one who was crippled from childhood. Imagine, Mephibosheth never got to run with the other kids. He was relegated to a sedentary lifestyle. I’m sure as cruel as kids can be, he never measured up to possibly be in line to inherit the throne. Yet, now he is shown the ultimate in kindness as he eats at the king’s table as one of his own.
David’s bond of love for Jonathan compels him to act on the covenant between him and Jonathan. For their covenant was to extend to their future family members. Their covenant was eternal in nature, just as the covenants of God are eternal. They extend into the future and include those who have entered His Kingdom.
We are like God when we honor our covenant commitments. When we keep our commitments, we honor God.
Action: I choose, like David, to honor the covenants and commitments I have made with God and man.
Yield: I choose to yield to the Holy Spirit’s conviction regarding my covenant vows with God.
Engage: I choose to engage with the Holy Spirit in honoring my commitments.
Relationship: I choose to live in intimate relationship with God.
Prayer: Father, I thank You for the example of David, who kept his covenant with Jonathan and extended kindness to Mephibosheth. May I be compelled to honor You by keeping my commitments. Amen.
Memory Verse: Proverbs 11:3 “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous will destroy them.” TLV
