Prayer: Father, Blessed be the rock of my salvation. You are my fortress and my deliverer. In You I will trust. Amen.
Reading: 2 Samuel 22 key: vs. 1-4 “David spoke to Adonai the words of this song in the day that Adonai delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said: “Adonai is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in Him I take refuge, my shield, my horn of salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my Savior—You save me from violence. I called upon Adonai, worthy of praise, and I was rescued from my enemies.” TLV
Attention: This song of David is found woven into a few of David’s psalms, specifically Psalm 18 and Psalm 144. I’m not going to include the entirety of each Psalm, so please take the time to read both Psalms. Here is a portion of each:
Psalms 18:1-4 “For the music director: a psalm of David the servant of Adonai. He chanted the words of this song to Adonai on the day Adonai delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said, I love You, Adonai my strength! Adonai is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in Him I take refuge, my shield, my horn of salvation, my stronghold. I called upon Adonai, worthy of praise, and I was rescued from my enemies.”
Psalms 144:1-2 “Of David. Blessed be Of David. Blessed be Adonai my Rock— who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.
2He is my lovingkindness, my fortress, my strong tower, and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues my people under me.
my Rock— who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle. He is my lovingkindness, my fortress, my strong tower, and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues my people under me.”
David wrote many songs (psalms) which portray his heart for God. He spoke with God, which requires listening. He went to God in times of hardship and God was everything to Him. His protector, defender, refuge, stronghold, rescuer, strength, and Savior.
David called God, his rock. What is a rock? It is strong, resilient, impenetrable, stable, immovable as a fortress. Many worship songs used to be written which were almost totally written from scripture. David’s songs became scripture.
We would do well to embrace the words of David in giving praise to God. Many hymn writers did just that. One of my favorite hymns was written by Martin Luther, titled, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. I include a link to this timeless hymn below and a newer variation. While many will be familiar, those who are not, please listen and embrace the heart of David.
Action: I choose today to embrace the words which David sang to Adonai as my own expressions of love.
Yield: I choose today to express my endearing love to Adonai.
Engage: I choose today to engage in worship by expressing the words of David unto God.
Relationship: I choose to live in intimate adoration of God.
Prayer: Father, You are a mighty fortress. You are my rock. You are my Savior. Blessed be the name of the Lord! Amen.
Memory Verse: Psalm 46: 2-4 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth change, though the mountains topple into the heart of the seas, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at their swelling. Selah” TLV
