Prayer: Father, what is the significance of Moab and Your Word in the past about Moab? I ask for understanding. Amen.
Reading: Isaiah 16 key: vs. 12-13 “So it will be, when Moab is weary upon the high place and comes to his sanctuary to pray, it will do him no good. This is the word that Adonai spoke concerning Moab in the past.” TLV
Attention: Moab and Israel were neighbors. As such, their history is intertwined. The account of Genesis 19:30-38 tells us that Lot, after having lost his wife while escaping Sodom & Gomorrah’s destruction, had children with his daughters. The first-born daughter had a son which she named Moab. So, the Moabites are descendants of Israel.
We see throughout scripture other references to Moab. Ruth was a Moabitess and King David is a descendent of hers (Ruth 4:18-22). It is recorded that David defeated the Moabites in battle and executed two-thirds of the Moabite prisoners by arbitrary selection (2 Samuel 8:2). Moab was represented among Solomon’s wives, and the worship of Chemosh, the Moabite god, accommodated in Solomon’s Jerusalem (1 Kings 11:1-8) *.
So, what word of Adonai is Isaiah referencing as having spoken it the “past?” In Deuteronomy 28:69 we read, “These are the words of the covenant that Adonai commanded Moses to make with Bnei-Yisrael in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant He made with them at Horeb.” It was in Moab that God spoke to Moses, giving him and the children of Israel a covenant to follow. The proximity to Moab lent itself to intermarriage and adaption of worshipping their god Chemosh. The high places were places of worship. The compromise of worship to another god, would result in empty praying with no benefit to the praying one.
Do not expect Adonai to allow us to split worship with any other god. The command from the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20) still stands today. He takes great offense to our embracing any god but Him. May we not be guilty of breaking His Commandments about exclusivity unto Him.
