Prayer: Father, there are evil perpetrators today, just as in the time of Micah. May your followers heed Your words. Amen.
Reading: Micah 2 key: vs. 1-2 “Oy to them who scheme wickedness, who work out evil upon their beds! In the light of the morning, they do it, for the power is in their hands. They covet fields, so they seize them, or houses, and take them away. So they oppress a man and his house— a man and his inheritance.” TLV
Attention: “Oy” is the Hebrew word for our English word, “Woe.” It is meant to alert those who are wicked, evil schemers, perpetrators of evil which Adonai declares, they devise their schemes while still in bed. They do it because they have the power to do it. Adonai even provides us with a list of the kinds of evil they perpetrate and their character, “They covet” other peoples possessions. They go after that which represents all that a man owns, and “his inheritance.”
To whom might Adonai be speaking? The prophet Micah lived during the reign of Ahab. King Ahab had a neighbor named Naboth and the king wanted his land. He asks for Naboth to sell him his vineyard to which Naboth says, ““Adonai forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers (1 Kings 21:3).” The whole account of the scheme of Ahab and his wife Jezebel are documented in 1 Kings 21. The consequence of their sin is forecast by Elijah and pronounced upon them. Interesting that Adonai worked through two prophets warning Ahab.
Are you listening to the prophets today? They are God’s instrument of warning about the consequences of evil and wickedness. We may not covet someone else’s land, but the sin of covetousness is one of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20 17) and it includes anything which belongs to your neighbor, including his wife.
Action: I choose to hear and heed the “Woe” in scripture.
Yield: I choose to submit to the warnings of scripture.
Engage: I choose to engage with the Holy Spirit in hearing His warnings for my life.
Relationship: I choose to live in intimate, holy relationship with Adonai.
Prayer: Father, may I heed your warnings, they are for my benefit and not for harm. May I not fall into the sin of covetousness. Amen.
Memory Verse: Exodus 20:17 ““Do not covet your neighbor’s house, your neighbor’s wife, his manservant, his maidservant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.” TLV
