Focus on What You Do Have

Prayer: Father, You invite me to seek You will all my heart, mind, and soul. Help me to accept Your invitation. Amen.

Reading: Proverbs 2 key: vs. 1-5
My son, if you accept my words
and treasure my mitzvot within you,
making your ear attentive to wisdom,
    inclining your heart to discernment,
yes, if you call out for insight,
lifting up your voice for discernment,
if you seek her as silver
and search for her as for hidden treasures,
then you will know the fear of Adonai
and discover the knowledge of God.

Attention: King Solomon launches this chapter with words as if he is our father. “My son…” will you listen to me? Will you receive my words? I have often wondered when reading the Wisdom Literature of scripture, where wisdom is compared to fine jewels, rare stones, gold, and silver, if we would be more prone to searching and seeking wisdom if like stones, gold and silver and precious metals, were buried under tons of dirt and rock.

Have you ever watched the History or Discovery Channel shows of men who spend and invests millions of dollars in hopes of finding gold? If wisdom were like gold mining, it would only be available to the rich or risk takers. If wisdom were like diamonds or other rare gems, it would be accessible only to those who had equipment and knew how to mine the depths of the earth.

Thankfully, the wisdom of Adonai is available and accessible to everyone. Wisdom is much like salvation, available to all, but found and received by few. I am reminded of an account in Acts 3, in the early moments of the Ekklesia movement, the apostles Peter and John were headed to the Temple for a time of prayer. Their route to the Temple brought them in contact with beggars, those who were reduced to relying on the compassion and generosity of others. As they were about to enter the Temple, a man began asking them for “tzedakah” (alms for the poor). Peter’s response, “Look at us (John and I), Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give to you—in the name of Yeshua ha-Mashiach ha-Natzrati, get up and walk! …and immediately the man’s feet and ankles were made strong. Jumping up, he stood and began walking, and he went with them into the Temple, walking and leaping and praising God!”

Here is my observation. Peter and John did not have cash or coin with them, but they addressed the need and offered him what they did have, authority in the name of Yeshua, over physical ailments, and limitations this man suffered from. They did not just pass him by or take the effortless way out. They did not hand him a dollar, pat him on the head and say Adonai bless you. They took the time to speak into this man, address his need, and offer healing. They looked the man in the eyes and directed him to look them in the eyes and offer what they did have, authority to heal.

Solomon had gold and silver in quantity. He was extravagantly rich! Is he offering you the riches of this world? No. He offers you wisdom. Will you receive wisdom today and tomorrow by opening the words of wisdom and life? It is your choice. This wisdom is from above and is available to all who seek and ask. Let us stop focusing on what we do not have and offer on what we do have.

Action: I will seek the wisdom of Scripture which is from above!

Yield: I will give my will to seek Godly wisdom.

Engage: I will engage with the Holy Spirit in seeking wisdom.

Relationship: I am in relationship with Adonai, when as a son, I listen and heed His wisdom.

Prayer: Father, Your ways are higher than my ways. Your thoughts are higher than my thoughts. Your wisdom is also higher than mine. Thank you for the wisdom which will guide me if I listen and heed. Amen.

Memory Verse: James 1:5
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all without hesitation and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
