Folly of Slackers

Prayer: Father, may I not be accounted along with those who are slackers. May I utilize and manage well, the time You give me every day. Amen.

Reading: Proverbs 26 key: vs. 16
16 A slacker is wiser in his own eyes
than seven people who answer sensibly.

Attention: We are not familiar today with the term “slacker” but, we might use words like unmotivated, aimless, apathetic for someone who avoids work or effort.

In my childhood there was a popular television show called, Leave it to Beaver, which featured the life of a young boy named Jerry Mathers, nicknamed the Beaver. He came from a middle-class family, and he was surrounded by a host of friends. There was one friend named Eddie Haskell, who was always a catalyst for getting the Beaver into trouble, when he listened to him. If I had to pick someone who modeled the life of a slacker, I would pick Eddie Haskell.

Eddie was always thinking of things they could do which was against the Beaver’s better judgement.

It was the listened to, unwise counsel of a friend which got the Beaver into trouble. Listening to unwise counsel will get us into trouble too. I hope that our study in the Proverbs of Solomon, has served to establish there is great wisdom in the scriptures and I forfeit the source of great counsel when I do not open the Word daily as a manual for living.

I may not listen or heed the counsel of Scripture after careful study, but I do not even have knowledge of the wisdom and counsel of Scripture if I do not open my Bible.

The Word of God will help you to make wise decisions, manage well the time God gives us each every day, and acknowledge His ways are higher than mine.

Action: I will engage in the daily lifestyle of consulting the Scriptures as a wise guide to my life.

Yield: I am yielded to the instruction and wise counsel of Scripture.

Engage: I am engaged with the Holy Spirit in seeking wise counsel from Scripture.

Relationship: I cannot live my life wisely, without the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit as a counselor and divine mentor. I praise You as a loving Father who shares His wise counsel with me. Amen.

Memory Verse: Lamentations 3:22-23
22 Because of the mercies of Adonai
    we will not be consumed,
    for His compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning!
    Great is Your faithfulness.
