Get Egypt Out of Me

Prayer: Father, Your servant is eager to commune with You and learn from Your Word. Reveal to me the blind spots in my life. Amen.

Reading: Numbers 21 key: vs. 4-5
They travelled from Mount Hor along the route to the Sea of Reeds in order to go around the land of Edom. The spirit of the people became impatient along the way.
The people spoke against God and Moses: “Why have you brought us from Egypt to die in the wilderness, because there is no bread, no water, and our very spirits detest the despicable food?

Attention: How often do we hear the words in scripture that the Hebrew nation was attacked, and the people (corporately) cried out to Adonai and He heard them or listened to them and delivered them?

When I was a young boy, I watched the original King Kong movie which came out in 1933. Looking back, it doesn’t seem particularly scary, but I remember a few reoccurring dreams where I dreamt a gorilla had gotten into my bedroom. Fortunately, just as he was about to get me, my dad would open the door and rescue me.

Adonai was much like my dad to the Hebrew nation. Time and time again, He rescued them. Yet, repetitiously, they committed insurrection against Adonai and Moses. The nation knew that Adonai was speaking to Moses. The declarations from Moses were from Adonai. He was the conduit or instrument through which Adonai spoke. Yet, they complained and murmured.

Notice that Moses tells us that it was “the spirit” of the people which now caused insurrection against Adonai. In their impatience, they began to grumble once again about “no bread, no water, and our very spirits detest the despicable food? I can only imagine that if the Divine has provided the food and He did, that it was the most nutritious, substantive, flavorful food ever created.

The charge against Adonai and Moses time and time again was, you brought us out here to die. Did He deliver them just to bring them out into the wilderness and die? Does that even make sense?

The way that I read scripture is that God brought them out of Egypt with a promise to give them a “promised land.” Adonai was having to get Egypt out of their spirit. While being oppressed in Egypt, they had been indoctrinated with a slave mentality.

My parents were both raised on farms. We always grew a big garden every year and mom did a lot of canning of fruits and vegetables. Mom used to say of my dad, “you can take the farmer off of the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the farmer.” People who have lived off the land, continue to live off the land.

The disservice we do to people who become born again is to say, Adonai loves you just the way you are. It is a true statement but does not mean that Adonai wants to leave you as you were. There is a whole lot of transformation which His Spirit needs to do.

Has Adonai delivered you from Egypt but cannot get Egypt out of you because you are comfortable in staying the way you are? I encourage you to work with the Holy Spirit in being transformed into His image.

Action: I will work with the Holy Spirit and the Word to transform me into the new man or woman.

Yield: I give my will, my spirit over to the Holy Spirit.

Engage: Working with the Holy Spirit in the transformation process.

Relationship: Being one with the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Father, I can be so obstinate and indifferent. Help me to listen to You and have a willing spirit to cooperate with You in my transformation into Your image. Amen.
