God of the Mountains

Prayer: Father, You are The God of everywhere. May I have an accurate concept of who You are as given by scripture. Amen.

Reading: 1 Kings 20 key: vs. 28-30 “Then a man of God approached the king of Israel and spoke to him saying, “Thus says Adonai: Because the Arameans have said, ‘Adonai is a God of the mountains, but He is not a God of the valleys,’ therefore I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am Adonai.” So they encamped one over against the other seven days. On the seventh day the battle was joined, and the children of Israel struck down 100,000 of the Aramean foot soldiers in a single day. The rest fled to Aphek into the city and the wall fell upon 27,000 men that were left. But Ben-Hadad fled into the city, into an inner chamber.” TLV

Attention: In the fictional movie Raiders of the Lost Ark, the Nazi’s mistakenly thought that whoever was in possession of the Ark of the Covenant, was invincible. They quickly discovered that was not the case. The armies of Ben-Hadad king of Aram discovered the hard way that an incorrect concept of Adonai would cost them dearly.

The intelligence report on Adonai was that He was a God of the Mountains and not a God of the valleys or plains. If we lure them to the plains, we will surely win. So, that army of Israel marched up against the Arameans and here is how the writer of 1 Kings 20 described the scene; “Now the children of Israel were mustered, given provisions, and marched against them. But when the children of Israel encamped before them, they looked like two little flocks of goats while the Arameans covered the land (vs. 27).”

The Arameans had to like the odds. They outnumbered the Israelites multiple times over, but Adonai had already declared, “I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am Adonai.” Notice that the scriptures do not document any casualties for the Israelites but, 100,000 of the enemy soldiers were killed by the Israelite army and then God causes a wall of the city of Aphek to fall on and kill another 27,000.

Adonai certainly delivered on his word. He is faithful and true. The enemy underestimated Adonai’s ability to protect His people.

The last line of Adonai’s declaration was “you shall know that I am Adonai.” Surely, they came to know that Adonai was God through the deliverance of God. Similarly, God has delivered us from the enemy. Do we remember and honor Him as God.

Action: I choose today to remind myself of the providence of God over the course of my life.

Yield: I choose to remember that Adonai is God.

Engage: I choose to engage with God as Lord.

Relationship: I choose to live in intimate relationship with Adonai.

Prayer: Father, I know You as Adonai and I acknowledge You as Adonai. You are Lord of my life. Thank you for the provision and protection You have given me. Amen.

Memory Verse: Acts 17:28a “for ‘In Him we live and move and have our being.’ TLV
