He Clung to Adonai

Prayer: Father, may I always cling to You. You are my fortress, my protector. In You I abide. Amen.

Reading: 2 Kings 18 key: vs. 4-5 “He trusted in Adonai, the God of Israel. Indeed, none of all the kings of Judah after him was like him—and none before him. For he clung to Adonai. He did not turn away from following Him, but kept His mitzvot, which Adonai had commanded Moses.” TLV

Attention: Have you ever seen a toddler who clung to his mother so tightly that it was a statement of “I’ll never let go.” Separation anxiety is real in infants. My mother was a church nursery coordinator. New parents who were visiting the church would attempt to get their child to enter a classroom and join the other toddlers’. It sometimes became a battle of wills.

As a bus driver, I occasionally experienced a kindergarten student who had never left mom and they struggled for that first week. The tears which were shed were many. Once they knew they were not parting forever, all was well.

Hezekiah received accolades for being different than the kings before and after him. The text says, “he clung to Adonai.” The image I receive is of a king intent on keeping Adonai close to him. He had a hold on Adonai, a grip which could not be broken. Maybe even desperation in his grip.

The text says of Hezekiah that he prospered wherever he went. He also “rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. He defeated the Philistines.” Why? Because “He trusted in Adonai.”

We will see a desperate king Hezekiah in the next chapter, who will receive a word from the Lord. See how Adonai intervenes and deliver’s His word through Isaiah the prophet.

I encourage you to cling to the living God by hanging onto every word which proceeds from His mouth.

Action: I choose to cling to the living God (Adonai) and His every word.

Yield: I choose to give the Holy Spirit access to the depths of my heart.

Engage: I choose to engage with the Holy Spirit in clinging to God.

Relationship: I choose to live in intimacy with Adonai.

Prayer: Father, I cling to You as my source of life, protection, wisdom, provision, and love. I love You and I love Your words. Amen.

Memory verse: Psalms 119:103 “How sweet is Your word to my taste— yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” TLV
