How God Sees Vows

Prayer: Father, I only want to see life as You see it. Direct my vision and thoughts. Amen.

Reading: Ecclesiastes 5 key: vs. 3-4 “When you swear a vow to God, don’t delay in fulfilling it. For He takes no delight in fools. Pay what you vow! It is better for you not to vow than to vow and not pay.”: TLV

Attention: One of the most impactful movies I have ever viewed was a movie titled “Unbroken.” The movie is based on the true-life story of Louis “Louie” Zampirini who flew as a bombardier of a United States Air Forces B-24 Liberator in World War II against Japan. His plane is shot down and he along with one other crew members are the only two to survive floating in the ocean for 26 days. On the 27th day they are rescued by Japanese forces and imprisoned in a Japanese war camp, where the presiding commander recognizes Louie as an Olympian and beats him mercilessly. Somewhere within Louie’s saga, he cries out to God making a vow to serve Him if he survives.

Some years later upon his return to the U.S., Louie is a desperate alcoholic and living terrified from the traumatic tortures he received in the war camp. With his wife, Louie attends a Billy Graham Crusade where he gives his life to God, keeping his vow he made during the war.

If we have married, we too have made a vow between God and our spouse, to remain faithful. Have we kept that vow to the full extent? Being faithful to our spouse only? Have we been faithful to keep all vows we have made to God? According to this scripture passage, God takes our vows seriously. May we take this day to repent and renew vows where necessary.

Action: I choose to repent today of any vows which I have broken and renew all vows with God and spouse.

Yield: I choose to submit to the sovereignty of God.

Engage: I choose to engage with the Holy Spirit in keeping all vows to my spouse and God.

Relationship: I choose to live in holy, intimate, obedient relationship with God.

Prayer: Father, I embrace the seriousness of keeping vows I have made to You and my spouse. Help me to be diligent in keeping my vows to You and my spouse.

Memory Verse: Jacob (James) 5:12 “But above all, my dear brothers and sisters, do not swear—either by heaven, or by the earth, or by any other oath. But let your “yes” be “yes,” and your “no,” be “no”—so that you may not fall under judgment.
