Prayer: Father, may I always desire to know You more. Help me to make new discoveries of who You are through Your Word. Draw me nearer to You today. Amen.
Reading: Exodus 3 key: vs. 11-15
11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and bring Bnei-Yisrael out of Egypt?”
12 So He said, “I will surely be with you. So that will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you. When you have brought the people out of Egypt: you will worship God on this mountain.”
13 But Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to Bnei-Yisrael and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is His Name?’ What should I say to them?”
14 God answered Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” Then He said, “You are to say to Bnei-Yisrael, ‘I AM’ has sent me to you.” 15 God also said to Moses: “You are to say to Bnei-Yisrael, Adonai, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My Name forever, and the Name by which I should be remembered from generation to generation.
Attention: Can you imagine, talking with Adonai and asking Him, “What is Your name?” Moses had worshipped Adonai, and his forefathers had passed down orally that they worshipped a superior being identified as Adonai which means, “The Lord.”
I believe Moses knew Adonai by His character identifiers like, Adonai Elyon (The Lord God Most High), Adonai Nissi (The Lord our Banner), Adonai Ro-eh (The Lord our Shepherd), Adonai Tzva’ot (The Lord of Hosts), and Adonai Yireh (The Lord provides). Moses knew Adonai (God’s) character, but he did not know His name. God’s response to his inquiry, “I Am Who I Am.”
This encounter reminds me of the Apostle Paul’s observation while visiting Athens. He saw statues for every known god of the Athenians, but just in case they missed one, they had an idol statue to an “unknown god.” Paul seized the opportunity to tell them of the God (Adonai) which they did not know.
The term god in our society and culture, is a general title given to all gods. If we believe in the God of the Hebrews, then we need to identify the God we serve, follow, and worship by the names He gives us. To just use the term god, allows the world to assume that we are all worshipping the same god.
To just use the term God for our flag salute and print on our money, is not specific enough. I encourage you to consider, using the Hebrew terms and names for the God we serve, follow, and worship. He is the great I AM.
Action: I choose no confusion about the God which I worship, I choose to identify as a follower of Adonai.
Yield: When I identify with Adonai, I am yielding to His sovereignty.
Engage: I embrace and engage with the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Relationship: I choose to be in relationship with the One true God, Adonai.
Prayer: Father, let there be no confusion about who You are, the great I AM and no confusion about who I worship, serve, and follow. Amen.
