Prayer: Father, may I come to see You as my protector, my Father, my strong tower just as David declared. In Jesus name, amen.
Reading: Psalm 59 key: vs. 17-18
17 But I—I sing of Your strength!
Yes, in the morning I sing aloud of Your lovingkindness.
For You have been my fortress,
a refuge in the day of my trouble.
18 O my strength, to You I sing praises.
For God is my strong tower—
my God of lovingkindness.
Attention: There are very few comparisons today like the towers and walls which cities would build for protection. As a child I recall traveling to Port Townsend, Washington (state) and viewing Fort Worden, a defensive stronghold built in the early 1900’s for the protection of the United States from invasion by sea. In its time, 1,000 troops were stationed there. In 1971, Fort Worden was established as a historical state park. Only the barracks and a portion of the bulkhead which housed mounted canons, remain.
David saw Adonai as his bulkhead, his strong tower, his protection from his enemies. He sought Adonai as a refuge, as a source of retreat, as a defender. In this psalm, David implores Adonai for justice and intervention on his and Israel’s defense.
I’m reminded of the cartoons which I used to watch as a child. There was one about a little dog who had a big Bulldog as his friend and strong arm. The little dog was always full of confidence when he came across his antagonists and his buddy was standing behind him. We can exhibit the same confidence and trust with God being our defender. He has our backs.
Action: I will cry out to God in my times of trouble as my strong tower.
Yield: I am yielded to God when I cry for His protection.
Engaged: I am engaged when I run to Adonai as my Heavenly Father.
Relationship: My relationship is confirmed when I call on Adonai.
Prayer: Father, I am Yours and I demonstrate my relationship with You when I call on You, I pray to You, I praise You, and when I run to You. Amen.
Memory Verse: Psalm 59:9-10
9 But You, Adonai, are laughing at them.
You scoff at all the nations.
10 O my strength, I watch for You—
for God is my strong tower.
