In the beginning

Prayer: Father, as we start a new year, it seems very appropriate to be starting from “the beginning”. I pray for new insight into Your creative ways. Reveal to us new understanding of those first six days. In the name of Yeshua. Amen.

Reading: Genesis 1 key vs. 1-2
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  Now the earth was chaos and waste, darkness was on the surface of the deep, and the Ruach Elohim was hovering upon the surface of the water.

Attention: The first couple of verses paint an interesting picture of earth. Moses tells us that the earth was “chaos and waste, darkness was on the surface of the deep.” The Lewis River is located across the street from where I live, and I was taking my daughter to work recently. The water and air temperature differences were such that steam was rising off the water. She commented that the scene was “eerie”. Now the only way we could see the steam is that daylight was breaking. It was light which revealed to us the condensation of water above the water. If it was dark like the Genesis description, we could not have seen or witnessed the phenomena.

About fifteen years ago, I was vacationing in New Mexico and had the experience of visiting Carlsbad Cavern. After descending to the depths of the cave, the tour guide asked us to stand still while he turned the lights off. Instantly, we were engulfed in total darkness. To me that was an “eerie” experience.

Do we capture the significance that God created light? Here is what John the revelator says about Adonai (God), “Now this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you—that God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all.” Do you see the contrast. Darkness is the absence of light. He is light and there is no darkness in Him!

Another observation about verse 2 is this, “and the Ruach Elohim (Holy Spirit) was hovering over the service of the water.” Water was the only substance as dry land had not yet been formed. Water was empty of life as “swarms of living creatures” (vs. 20) had not been formed yet. Since the Ruach Elohim is spirit, we could not have seen Him, yet Moses provides us with a play-by-play description of what was spoken by God into existence. Certain translations say that the earth was formed from “nothing”. This is beyond our comprehension. How could this be?

Do you believe the creation account? I don’t know if a day was a literal translation or not, but I believe that Adonai (God) could accomplish all of creation in six literal days. The first chapters of Genesis are rich in content about creation and give us insight into God, the Creator of heaven and earth. He is our origin! From Him we were designed. He breathed life into us and made us like Him.

Action: I fully embrace the creation model of a sovereign God.

Yield: When I acknowledge God’s creative process, I acknowledge Him.

Engage: I am engaged with God when I acknowledge my beginning with Him.

Relationship: Faith is a viable belief system.

Prayer: Father, I acknowledge You as Creator, Sustainer, Omnipotent Lord. All knowing, all seeing, intimately involved with Your creation. Thank You for being a Sovereign Lord of my life. Amen.

Memory Verse: Genesis 1:27
27 God created humankind in His image, in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them.
