Integrity, God’s Version

Prayer: Father, teach me what Your integrity looks like Lord. Help me to embrace Your ways and thoughts. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Reading: Psalm 15 key: vs. 1-2
A psalm of David.
Adonai, who may dwell in Your tent?
Who may live on Your holy mountain?
The one who walks with integrity,
who does what is right,
and speaks truth in his heart,

Attention: I hear today people being interviewed and talking about personal truth and integrity, but it is always anchored in themselves. What is their personal truth? Their personal truth is based on their own rather than a sovereign divine source outside of themselves.

The psalmist today establishes what integrity is for those who live with Adonai. He begins by asking God, “Who may dwell in Your tent?” If you want to live with God there is a lifestyle of character which is obedient to the Torah, God’s law. The psalmist establishes what integrity looks like. It is “one who does what is right, and speaks truth in his heart, who does not slander with his tongue, does not wrong his neighbor, and does not disgrace his friend, who despises a vile person in his eyes, but honors those who fear Adonai, who keeps his oath even when it hurts, and does not change, who lends his money without usury, and takes no bribe against the innocent.”

My generation questioned God’s existence and what gives God the right to set the rules. I remember rationalizing it this way. Do you have a dad? Does he (and the bank) own a home? Does he pay the mortgage, the bills and provide for your needs? Does he make the rules in your home? What gives him the right?

Perhaps God has the right to set the rules since He created us and provides for us. The psalmist makes an interesting point when he says, one of the characteristics of integrity is “one who does right.” Jacob (James) 4:17 says, “Therefore whoever knows the right thing to do and does not do it—for him it is sin.”

God has amply given to us His definition of integrity. May we study to know and understand His definition of living and death, freedom and slavery, integrity, and sin.

Action:  I will seek to always do what is right.

Yield: I will yield to God’s definition and not my own or the narrative of the world.

Engage: I am transformed when I engage with the Holy Spirit in the process of life.

Relationship: It is relationship when I seek His way and not my own.

Prayer: Father, praise You for the wisdom and instruction of Your Word. It is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Help me to hide and treasure Your Word in my heart, so that I will not sin against You. Amen.

Memory Verse: James 4:17
17 Therefore whoever knows the right thing to do and does not do it—for him it is sin.
