Prayer: Father, thank You for the documentation of lineage’s which establish the veracity of the truth of Your word. Amen.
Reading: 1 Chronicles 2 key: vs. 1-2 “These are the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad and Asher.”
Attention: If you have been studying and journaling with me for the past four years, we know through scripture that the man named Israel was former named Jacob. He married sisters (Leah & Rachel) who both had handmaidens (Zilpah & Dinah & Bilhah, respectively). Jacob had children by each of the sisters and their handmaidens, totaling twelve sons. Those twelve sons plus the grandsons of Joseph (Ephraim & Manasseh) make up the twelve tribes of Israel (Jacob’s God given new name).
I provide a graph in my book, “Ekklesia Declared!,” which provides the birth order of the sons and links them with their mothers. The graph also gives interesting insights about the blessings given to each by Israel prior to his death. The graph shows the order that each received his blessing, the order land was apportioned to each tribe (son) by Joshua in the covenant promised land, names mentioned in Ezekiel and Revelation.
The writer of 1 Chronicles does not mention the sons of Israel in birth order. The first four (Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah) are listed in birth order. After Judah, the birth order was Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulan, Joseph, and Benjamin. All twelve are accounted for, but not in birth order. Why? Not sure.
Another observation about the listing of the sons of Israel. The writer continues by telling us about the sons born to Judah only. Why? Judah is the tribe prophesied to be the line through which the kings would come. So, when we follow the line of Judah on down further, we see a man named Jesse, who fathered seven sons, the last son was named “David (vs.13-15).” The writer establishes for all generations who follow and read his accounting that David descended from the line of Judah.
I hope you have a new appreciation for 1st Chronicles and the scriptures by understanding the significance of the genealogies of Israel, his son Judah, and David.
