Knowing God’s Will

Prayer: Father, what a perfect day to consider Your will for my life. Lead me on the quest to know You and Your will. Amen.

Reading: Nehemiah 7 key: vs. 65 “The governor said to them that they should not eat any of the most holy things until a kohen arose with Urim and Thummim.” TLV

Attention: I have heard people all my life utter these words, “I am seeking the will of God” or “I would like to know the will of God.” Please allow me to establish that the will of God is not some nebulous or mysterious thing. God declares that His will for our lives is first and foremost, obedience.

In the time of the Old Testament prophets, priests and kings, we are told of a physical instrument called the Urim and Thummin which were used to help determine the will of God in a matter. We do not know exactly how they worked but the Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary give us this definition, “They apparently were two objects that served as sacred lots. That is, they were used to determine God’s will or to receive a divine answer to a question. They were “given,” perhaps drawn or shaken, from a bag. One object gave one answer. The other lot gave another answer. Probably, whichever lot come out first, that was understood to be God’s answer” (page 1643).

The Apostle Paul tells the followers of Messiah in Thessalonica, “For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Yeshua. For this is the will of God—your sanctification: to abstain from sexual immorality; to know, each of you, how to gain control over his own body in holiness and honor— not in the passion of lust like the pagans who do not know God” (1 Thessalonians 4:2-5).

Did you notice who Paul credits for his instruction to us and the followers in Thessalonica? He credits his words coming from the “Lord Yeshua.”  The instructions were not his own, they were given to him by God.

Another example of God’s will is found in instruction given to us and Roman followers of Yeshua, “Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect (Romans 12:2).” God’s will is that we not become conformed to the world’s narrative and mind set, which is opposed to God. They do not know God, therefore, do not allow them to control the narrative about who God is.

These are just a few examples of God’s will being revealed in scriptures. If we do not know the scriptures, we will not know the will of God for us. May we become a people who seeks to know God’s revealed will for all men, through the scriptures.

Action: I choose to know the revealed will of God for my life.

Yield: I choose to submit my life to the revealed will of God in scriptures.

Engage: I choose to engage with the help of the Ruach to know and submit to the revealed will of God.

Prayer: Father, I desire to know Your revealed will for my life and to be obedient to Your will. Amen.

Memory Verse: 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 “For this is the will of God—your sanctification: to abstain from sexual immorality; to know, each of you, how to gain control over his own body in holiness and honor— not in the passion of lust like the pagans who do not know God.” TLV
