Prayer: Father, please expose to me the attempted deception of evil like You did with the prophet Ahijah. Amen.
Reading: 1 Kings 14 key: vs. 4-5 “So Jeroboam’s wife went to Ahijah’s home at Shiloh. He was an old man now and could no longer see. But the Lord had told Ahijah, “Jeroboam’s wife will come here, pretending to be someone else. She will ask you about her son, for he is very sick. Give her the answer I give you.” TLV
Attention: Did Jeroboam really believe he was going to deceive a prophet of the Lord, the God of Israel? It was Ahijah who had anointed Jeroboam as king and now he had his wife return to Ahijah to inquire about their sick son. Will he die from his sickness?
There is no way of getting around the curse which the Lord, the God of Israel, declared to Jeroboam’s wife that day. Judgement was coming to his household because he had “(You have) done more evil than all who lived before you. You have made other gods for yourself and have made me furious with your gold calves. And since you have turned your back on me, I will bring disaster on your dynasty and will destroy every one of your male descendants, slave and free alike, anywhere in Israel. I will burn up your royal dynasty as one burns up trash until it is all gone.” The Lord declared Jeroboam’s son would die as soon as his wife (and the son’s mother) entered the “town.”
Tough words for sure. I’m sure the mother was grieving as she walked home. She would never again see her son alive.
There are consequences to our sin. Jereboam had become evil and done more evil “than all (kings) who lived before him.” Instead of leading the people closer to God, he led them further away. He held on to the practices of paganism which his forefathers saw in Egypt. Unlike his grandfather David, he did not repent and turn away from evil, rather he embraced it.
God exposed and foiled his plan to approach and inquire of the prophet Ahijah. Know that you too, will not be able to deceive a prophet of God. Your sin is not hidden from God nor His prophets, nor His people. In love, God will even expose you, like He did with David.
Action: I choose to be honest with God and myself about my sin.
Yield: I choose to yield to the Ruach Elohim as He convicts me of sin.
Engage: I choose to engage with the Holy Spirit in being mentored into all truth.
Relationship: I choose to live in intimate relationship with God.
Prayer: Father, I cannot fool You nor deceive You. You know my way and my heart. May I live transparently before You. Help me to live for You, every day. Amen.
Memory Verse: Psalm 119: 11 “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” TLV
