Magnify the Lord

Prayer: Father, the words of David inspire me to cry out along with him, “Adonai be magnified.” Amen.

Reading: Psalm 40 key: 2-4a
I waited patiently for Adonai.
He bent down to me and heard my cry.
He brought me up out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire.
Then He set my feet on a rock.
He made my steps firm.
He put a new song in my mouth—
a hymn of praise to our God.

Attention: There are three statements which David makes in Psalm 40 which attract my attention today.

First, “Your plans for us (me) are wonderful.” I embrace this declaration of David’s and I am reminded of a scripture found in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans that I have in mind for you, declares Adonai, plans for shalom and not calamity—to give you a future and a hope.” You order my steps for which I am grateful.

David then says, “I delight to do Your will, O my God.” I too delight in doing Your will. Your “will” is a study all to its own. I struggled as many followers of Jesus do in finding His will for me. Your will is not nebulous or a mystery. Your will is well defined in Scripture when we look and seek for it. Your will is for obedience, holiness, and righteousness. Your will is that all men would be saved, and none would perish but have eternal life. You delight in me when I delight in You.

Lastly, David concludes with, “Let those who love Your salvation continually say”: “Adonai be magnified.” I do not hear the word “magnify” often in the circles of faith. It is a word which glorifies God on a magnified declaration. Magnification in human terms makes something bigger than it appears. In spiritual terms the word is an attempt to approach adequacy of praise, but it still falls short.

Action: I will magnify Adonai even though my best efforts to praise Him fall short.

Yield: Giving to God the praise He is due.

Engage: Involvement in the act of praise and glorifying God.

Relationship: I am in relationship with Adonai when I give Him praise!

Prayer: Father, You are worthy of all the glory, and honor, and praise! Amen.

Memory Verse: Psalm 40:17b
Let those who love Your salvation
    continually say: “Adonai be magnified!”
