Not Empty or Exhausted

Prayer: Father, Your providential care is amazing. Thank You for the examples of how You care for us in very practical ways. Amen.

Reading: 1 Kings 17 key: vs. 14-16 “For thus says Adonai God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not be exhausted nor shall the jug of oil be empty until the day Adonai sends rain on the land.’” So she went and did according to the word of Elijah—and she and he, and her household ate for many days. The jar of flour was not exhausted, nor did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of Adonai which He spoke through Elijah.” TLV

Attention: I have marveled at this chapter’s account of the providential care of Elijah the prophet. First God sends ravens to feed Elijah. As the wadi dries up, God tells Elijah to go to Zarephath, to a widow who God has commanded to feed him.

How ironic that God would command a prophet to go to a widow who was also in need. When Elijah and the widow cross paths, she is preparing to eat her last meal for her son and her and die. She is hopeless and Elijah is helpless. Yet, Adonai supernaturally provides from what little flour and oil she has for her son, herself, and Elijah. Faithfully, the widow makes the cakes and feeds Elijah and her son. They all eat, and we are told the “jar of flour was not exhausted, nor did the jug of oil become empty.”

I have experienced God’s providential character. Just like the widow, God’s provision began when natural means were exhausted. He is always right on time.

The example of Elijah and the widow is faith in action. They believed what God declared He would provide. This example is also a demonstration that God cares for us more than the birds of the air or the beast of the field. Yet, he provides for them too.

Are things tight for you right now? Place your trust and confidence in the providential care of Adonai God of Israel. He cares for you.

Action: I choose to rely on the providential care of Adonai God of Israel.

Yield: I choose to surrender to the supernatural care of an all-sufficient God.

Engage: I choose to engage in the provisionary nature of God.

Relationship: I choose to live in intimate relationship with Adonai God of Israel.

Prayer: Father, what an encouraging example the widow of Zarephath is for me today. She trusted the declaration from the mouth of Elijah and she, he, and her son were sustained. The flour and oil never ran out! Praise to Adonai God of Israel. Amen.

Memory Verse: Matthew 6: 25-26 “So I say to you, do not worry about your life—what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? “Look at the birds of the air. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns; yet your Father in heaven feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” TLV
