Prayer: Father, You are the High Priest and King over my life. There is no one like You, none other but You. Amen.
Reading: Genesis 14 key: 18
18 Then Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine—he was a priest of El Elyon.
Attention: Rarely do we find men who are both King and priest mentioned in the Old Testament, but in Genesis 14 is a man named Melech-Tzedek (Melchizedek) who is the king of Salem and called “a priest of El Elyon (God most high).” Melchizedek’s name appears in Psalm 110 and multiple times in Hebrews as both priest and King.
He blessed “Abram by El Elyon, Creator of heaven and earth, and blessed El Elyon, Who gave over your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
We love to be blessed. We ask and acknowledge the blessings we receive from El Elyon (God most high). My question to myself, “Do I bless God?”
There is an old hymn titled, Make Me a Blessing (copyright 1924 by George S. Schuler), which we used to sing in worship. The refrain says, “Make me a blessing, make me a blessing. Out of my life may Jesus shine. Make me a blessing, O Savior I pray. Make me a blessing to someone today.”
Notice that not only can blessing be horizontal from a Priest to a person and person to person. We may bless others as well. However, how often do we think of blessing or being a blessing to El Elyon?
In two of my favorite Psalms, King David says, “I will bless Adonai at all times. His praise is continually in my mouth (34:2)” and “Bless Adonai, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy Name (103:1).” David declares blessing to Adonai, who He exalts, magnifies, and worships.
May we together be about the kingdom business of blessing others and blessing God.
Action: I will bless Adonai today by blessing others. His praise will be on my lips constantly.
Yield: I yield my life to Adonai when I bless Him and bless others.
Engage: I am engaged with Adonai when I bless Him by blessing others.
Relationship: I am in deeper relationship with Adonai when I bless Him and my family members.
Prayer: Father, may I always seek to bless others and bless You. Thank You for the examples from the Psalms which bless You! May I seek to bless horizontally and vertically. Amen.
